Eligible brands include Radisson Blu, Park Plaza, Park Inn, and Country Inn & Suites. “Asia Pacific” includes locations such as Australia, India, China, Fiji, Philippines, Thailand, Tahiti, Nepal, and Japan. Radisson’s Stay One Night, Get One Night promotion provides the first 50,000 Club Carlson members to register with a free night award that can be used at any Radisson Blu or Radisson Hotel in the US, Canada, or the Caribbean after one qualified stay.  The stay must be booked on the Radisson or Club Carlson website by October 31st and can take place at any US, Canadian, or Caribbean based Radisson or Radisson Blu property between October 1st and December 31st. Like everyone else, I was a much bigger fan of their Big Night Giveaway promotion earlier this year, as you received 50,000 points that could be used at any property worldwide, however this is still a great promo, especially if you can find a cheap rate in your area.

When looking for rates this weekend, I found several properties priced below $100, with airport locations usually offering the lowest options.  Remember, your free night can be used at any US/CA/Caribbean property, meaning that you can redeem it for a $300+ stay at the Radisson Blu Chicago, Radisson Blu St. Martin, or Radisson Martinique. Using October 6th – 7th as an example, here are some decent rates:

  • Radisson Hotel Orlando – UCF $69.30
  • Radisson Hotel Akron $84.15
  • Radisson Hotel Phoenix-Chandler $86
  • Radisson Suite Hotel YYZ – $87.99 CAD
  • Radisson San Jose, CA Airport $88
  • Radisson LAX Airport $95
  • Radisson Ontario, CA Airport $94
  • Radisson MCO Airport $99
  • Radisson Resort Orlando – Celebration $94
  • Radisson Hotel Phoenix Airpot $94

If you find a cheaper rate on any other website, you can submit a Best Rate Guarantee and save an additional 25% off the lower rate. You can also currently earn 8% (next two days only) cash back by starting your booking at TopCashBack or 5% by beginning your booking at BeFrugal.com. Both sites redirect you to Radisson.com, so your booking will still qualify for the promotion.  There are mixed reviews for both sites in terms of properly recording your booking and the timely credit of funds, however with the rates above, you won’t be out much if you don’t receive the cash back.

Also, make sure you register for Club Carlson’s Stay More Nights, Earn More Points promotion, offering bonus points for each night (including your Stay One Night, Get One Night stay) from October 1 – December 31.  You’ll receive 2,000 bonus points per night for your first 1-5 nights, 4,000 bonus points per night for 6-9 nights, and 6,000 bonus points per night for 10 to 20 nights.

If you’re not yet a Club Carlson member, sign up here for 2,000 points after your first stay.

*Points + Cash stays are eligible for both promotions*

If you’ve been following along with the Olympic posts, then you know that I opted to stay at the Radisson Blu Portman in London at a prepaid rate of £120 GBP per night during my week long Olympic trip.  The May Fair, a 5 star boutique hotel, was also available for 50,000 Club Carlson points per night for the entire length of my stay (a great deal considering it was pricing at £450 GBP or $705 USD a night), but I decided to save the points for a future trip. During my pre-booking TripAdvisor review, I noted an interesting comment where  a reader had emailed the hotel to see if better rates were available than those quoted online.  I did as such and was promptly emailed back with a non-refundable deposit due rate of £120 GBP per night ($188 USD) inclusive of taxes, internet, and breakfast for a queen size standard room.  This was even better than their Cash & Points rate of 15k points and £137.40 per night and a definite steal during the Olympics.

I was a little hesitant prior to arriving as several of the comments noted outdated rooms, badly in need of refurbishment, while the reviews weren’t entirely wrong, I found my stay to be comfortable.  I arrived around 11am and was told that my room would not be ready for at least two-three hours.  The front desk staff did inform me that I was being upgraded to a superior room with a balcony on the top floor.  They also provided me with a breakfast voucher (breakfast is free for all guests) and I was able to grab some food prior to the restaurant closing for breakfast. I ordered an egg white omelet and grabbed some fresh fruit and yogurt.  I was pretty impressed with the breakfast, it was certainly up to Radisson Blu standards.

Before I could finish breakfast the front desk manager came over to let me know that my room was already cleaned and ready. The room was located on the 11th floor, even-though the elevator only went to the 10th floor. They offered to help with my luggage up to the one flight of stairs and remarked that the room was quieter and had better views than the lower floors.  The room was quaint and comfortable, though it lacked the typical Radisson Blu bedding, modern furnishings (it did have a flat-screen), modern bathroom, etc.  It was spacious for London and had a great view overlooking the London Eye, Hyde Park, and much of central London.  While not luxurious, the bed provided a great night’s sleep and the shower had excellent water pressure.  The bathroom was a bit dated as well, though the typical Radisson Blu products and over-sized towels were provided. There was also nightly turn down service with water replenishment (very important) and chocolate. My first night I also received a fruit platter and commemorative Olympic coin.  The internet (wired and wireless) in the hotel guest rooms went out for about 12 hours, but was otherwise excellent, maybe even the fastest I’ve had in any hotel room (extremely important for the blog and last minute ticket swaps).

The concierge was both helpful and friendly and printed out my e-tickets for some last minute Olympic purchases without a fee.  The location of the hotel itself was fantastic, just a short walk to the Marble Arch or Bond Street Undergrounds.  The bellman also provided excellent service and loaded my bags in the taxi before I was even finished checking out.  I did not have a chance to visit the gym as I literally was running from event to event (with stops at the Chase VIP Lounge and the hospitality houses).

About a week after my departure I received a survey from Radisson to evaluate my stay.  I noted the positives but also made mention of the outdated room and inconsistencies with the Radisson Blu brand. I received a note back that same day from the Guest Relations Manager:

Your feedback is very valuable to me and I was delighted to see your overall fantastic rankings especially in regards to our indeed wonderful staff – your report will be a great motivation for the entire team. In regards to the room decoration and furniture, I am pleased to confirm that we are currently in the planning stages for a full refurbishment which we hope to see materialising in 2013. Until then, rolling programmes in housekeeping and engineering will keep the rooms up to the standard a guest expects from a Radisson Blu Hotel. We are very much looking forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the near future. Until then, please do not hesitate to contact me in case I can be of any further assistance.

Several blog readers became familiar with TopCashBack as a result of the Club Carlson promotions this summer, where the site was offering 10% cash back (thanks to FrequentMiler) on the total bill for all Radisson bookings. The offer for Radisson hotels is unfortunately back down to 5%, but did you know that TopCashBack has an extensive list of other hotel and travel partners, including some of the largest chains – Starwood, Marriott, and IHG? I had never really taken a detailed look at the other vendors but there are some real surprises from luxury to low-cost brands both domestically and abroad:

Cash Back Rates
Accor Hotels – 8%
IHG (Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn) – 6%
Hotels.com 5.5%
BookHotelRooms.com 6%
Starwood Hotels 3%
Choice Hotels 5%
Occidental Hotels 6%
Wyndham 3%
Preferred Hotel Group 3%
Riu Hotels 1%
Radisson 5%
Preferred Hotel Group 3%
Melia Hotels 7%
Expedia (2% Hotels & Car Rentals, 2.75% Vacations, $2.25 flights)
Priceline (3% on Hotels, Vacations, Cruises, and Car Rentals, $5 on flights)
Mercure / Ibis / Novotel – 8%
Sofitel – 8%
Best Western – 5%
Ramada – 3%
Marriott (2.1% Marriott & Renaissance, 3.5% Courtyard, 2.2% Residence Inn, 4.5% Fairfield Inn, 3.9% SpringHill Suites, 3% Autograph Collection, 2.3% TownePlace, 3% AC Hotels)
Baymont – 3%
Studio 6 – 4.5%
CheapOair.com – ($15 hotel, $25 vacation, $8 flights, $5 car)
Fairmont – 5%
Hojo – 3%

The best part about using TopCashBack is that you can still earn an online booking bonus and full points for stays! Since  TopCashBack simply forwards you on to the hotel’s own website, the hotel essentially treats the booking the same as any other booked directly on their website.  In my experience it normally takes about two-three weeks to see any cash back activity post to your account, though sometimes it can take longer.  I just received a posting for 3% back on a Le Meridien stay in mid July. If you travel for business and can book your own hotel, this is a nice extra bonus on those long stays!

TopCashBack also allows you to earn $5 when you refer a friend, once that friend earns at least $10 cash back.  The links in this post include my referral information but please feel free to sign up and post your own referral link in the comments section and we can start a referral conga-line.

UPDATE – Check the comments section for a 16% IHG cashback opportunity courtesy of dealswelike & Gee.  Also, check the comments if you are more interested in receiving Ultimate Rewards points for your bookings courtesy of Grant.

Club Carlson
Club Carlson has a very easy way to earn 100 points per day by browsing through pictures of some of their properties in their Vacation Look Book. The promotion started Tuesday and runs through September 24, leaving 40 days for those who haven’t registered yet to get in on 4000 points. It literally takes under a minute to browse through the properties each day, so definitely add it to your daily points routine.  Just Another Points Traveler highlights that a family of 5 could earn 20,000 points via the promotions thanks to Club Carlson’s easy transfer rules. That’s essentially two free nights at any category 1 property! Alternatively, every 2,000 points can be redeemed for 250 airline miles.

Not yet a Club Carlson member, sign up and receive 2000 points for completing a stay within 90 days.  There is also a 15,000 point Park Plaza Ultimate Night Giveaway promotion on-going through August 28th.

Virgin America
Another week, another Virgin America 20% off coupon.  This one comes courtesy of Banana Republic and a quick Facebook game.  Check it out here. All travel must be booked by August 31st and is valid for flights from August 22nd – November 14th.

Delta & Meliá Hotels
For bookings through August 31st, earn double SkyMiles on all Meliá European hotel stays through September 30th.  All reservations must be made via www.melia.com or through their reservation line.  A few hotels are not participating, so be sure to check the promotion website for full details.

Now that I had my flight reserved, step two in my London Olympics planning was finding a reasonable hotel rate.  I decided I wanted to limit my search to Central London and I was open to either using points or finding a great last minute non-refundable rate.  I limited my search to Hilton, Marriott, Radisson, and Starwood properties, as I have the most amount of points with them and elite status.  I began with Radisson, expecting to use my 2012 / 2011 Big Night Giveaway (and sister promotion) points for at least four free nights at one of their properties.  Here’s what I found:

Radisson

The May Fair, a 5 star boutique hotel, was available for 50,000 points per night for the entire length of my stay, a great deal considering it was pricing at £450 GBP or $705 USD a night.  Considering I earned most of my Radisson promotion points by spending $99 USD per night, this was not a bad deal.  I checked reviews for all three hotels on TripAdvisor and the May Fair definitely had the most positive feedback.  However, the Radisson Blu Portman had an interesting comment about readers emailing the hotel to see if better rates were available than those quoted online.  I did as such and was promptly emailed back with a non-refundable deposit due rate of £120 GBP per night ($188 USD) inclusive of taxes, internet, and breakfast for a queen size standard room.  This is even better than their Cash & Points rate of 15k points and £137.40 per night.  I decided that if I was going to stay at a Radisson I’d save my points for a more aspirational stay / location and take advantage of the £120 GBP rate that I was offered.

Starwood

When searching for availability for the entire trip absolutely nothing was displayed on SPG’s website:

However, when breaking out my stay day by day, the W and Park Lane properties were available, though at quite the cost. The cheapest rate was £269 ($421.59 USD) or 16,000 points per night.  Although SPG is my favorite chain, I quickly decided that I would not be staying with Starwood during the Olympics. The hotel airports were tempting, though I really wanted to stay in Central London.

Hilton

Hilton has a ton of properties in London and several of them were reasonably priced with normal cancellation policies, allowing you to cancel the room until day of check-in.  However, when cross-referenced with reviews on TripAdvisor, it seemed that the cheaper properties were also some of the oldest and least “Hilton like”.

The higher rated properties were priced higher and required more points (lots more points – those rates are per night):

The Radisson, which was rated just a little bit better than the Hilton properties, was still the best purchase (Radisson Blu Portman) and redemption option (May Fair).  I wasn’t willing to redeem 50k Hilton points for an OK property pricing at £140, though I would consider redeeming 50k Gold Points for a top rated 5 star boutique property.

One interesting note during my Hilton research,  I came across Hilton promotion code PR13CB which gives you some greatly discounted rates.  I was able to get the Hilton Paddington down from over £280 per night to £129 per night, in-line with the Radisson rate for a hotel directly connected to London Paddington Station. As per the forums, the code is a corporate benefit not tied to any specific employer, however the rate is not eligibile for any points promotions. I would have seriously considered booking at this rate (especially as a Hilton Diamond member), though it was only available for part of my trip.

Marriott

Quick elimination – the Marriott properties in London were extremely expensive and I wasn’t willing to redeem 40k points per night (category 8).

So I’m currently on day three of my Radisson Blu Portman stay and I’m happy with my selection.  I’ll have a full trip report next week but some quick notes:

  • I arrived early on Sunday at 11am and was given a upgraded superior room on the top floor by 12pm (the elevator only goes to the second highest floor…more on that later).  While I waited I was invited to sit for the free  breakfast – they make a very good egg white omelet.
  • The room is more than comfortable, though it lacks the typical Radisson Blu bedding, modern furnishing, etc.  It’s spacious and has a great view overlooking the London Eye and much of Central London. Turn-down service every night includes water and chocolate.
  • The location is fantastic for the Olympic venues and is just a short walk to the Marble Arch or Bond Street Undergrounds.  The Finland and Norway Olympic Associations are also staying at the hotel.

Stay tuned for the next post on how I was able to obtain affordable Olympic tickets for the Athletics, Sync Swimming, Volleyball, and USA Basketball events.
