Continuing the same promotion from last month, Airtran A+ segments can still be purchased at a 20% discount using Amex points.  This coincides nicely with Southwest’s termination of their Amex/Rapid Rewards agreement, which officially ends today, June 30th.  As another discount domestic carrier on a segments system (instead of miles), Airtran is a good alternative option to consider, particularly for travel in the Southeast.

Bottom Line

Segments purchases with Amex points continue to be a cost-effective way to get some free domestic travel, but be sure that you are getting good value for your Amex flex-points.  Generally these points are worth 1 mile on any other airline, and should be valued at or above an airlines individual mile worth due to their flexibility.  With the discount, Airtran one-way tickets are going at the equivalent of 9,600 miles, while on most airlines a similar ticket would cost you 12,500.
