If you’ve ever been to Denver’s airport, there is a good chance you probably muttered, “Why is this airport so far outside the city?”  A drive from downtown to the airport is a solid 30 miles.  The airport hotel district doesn’t provide much relief as the shuttle rides are pretty lengthy.

A lot of the ‘rural’ pain looks to be changing soon as DIA is currently constructing a 519 room Westin connected to DIA as well as a high speed train into the city.

I hate to get so excited about this since it’s still a couple years out, but this promotional video makes the new project look so awesome with the dramatic music.  It also appears most people hanging out at DIA will now be required to wear suits when the project is completed.

Is it possible the US is finally going to have a cool airport?!

The US already has a cool airport: SFO. :D

I don’t get the complaints about how far from the city DIA is. It’s location allows it to have the most efficient runway layout, nearly unlimited expansion, and it’s runway layout allows for operations in more inclement weather than Stapleton ever could.

They’ve been talking about building an attached hotel for 15 years. I’ll believe it when I see it.

The rental car taxes at DEN are outrageous, adding close to 40% to the cost of a rental.

High speed train isn’t what they are putting in. It’s just a Denver Light Rail train.

  • Daniel said,

The drive from the Airport to downtown Denver is 14 miles, not a solid 30, just FYI (from a Denverite).

The official website lists 23 miles.

The default Google Maps search is a little over 27 miles.
