After a long day on the Olympic Peninsula and in the Olympic National Park, we decided to stay close explore the Seattle area. The first place on our stop was the Pike Place Market followed by the Seattle Space Needle.

Trip Report

Pike Place Market

We grabbed some coffee from the W Hotel lobby and decided to walk the 1/2 mile distance over to the Pike Place Market. This was our first visit to the Pike Place Market so we didn’t know what to expect other than what we’ve seen on television. But we did know it is one of the oldest public markets in the United States. We figured we’d just explore the market with coffee in hand until we found something interesting to watch or taste from one of the many merchants, craftspeople, or farmers.

Upon entering we found the floral section with plenty of fresh flowers on display. We had no reason to stop here so we turned to the left for the main attraction.

It wasn’t long before we found the seafood section. Fresh Seafood is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the Pike Place Market. Knowing there is so much more stuff to see, we figured we’d hang around the World Famous Pike Place Fish Market for a few moments to see if we can see someone flinging fresh fish.

Sure enough, an order was placed just as we were walking away. The guy below yelled to his buddy they have a fresh fish order to fulfill.

Presentation of the fish is key. He made sure the customer was ok with the selection then proceeded to fulfill the order.

Next, he wound up and let it rip to his buddy behind the counter.

The Pike Place Market is filled over 200 independent small businesses. So we left the Fish Market to peruse the merchants and found a few snacks along the way.

After a few snacks in the market we headed out for a short 1 mile walk over to the Seattle Space Needle. This was an easy walk on such a nice day.

The views of the Olympic Mountains were nice to see since we visited them the day before.

Bottom Line

We spent about a half day exploring Downtown Seattle. We felt this was just enough time to see some of the more famous attractions before grabbing a long lunch. The remaining few days of our trip we’d spend outside of the city visiting the San Juan Islands and a few wineries north east of the city.
