Quick reminder that one of the Chase Freedom categories this quarter is Gas Stations for 5% cash back. The categories this quarter are (Through March 31, 2013):
- Gas Stations – who doesn’t need gas!
- Starbucks
- Drugstores
Mrs. Weekly Flyer has had the Chase Freedom® Visa for over a year. I haven’t had it, but I just downgraded my Chase Sapphire Preferred® Visa to the Chase Freedom® Visa for two reasons. First, the Chase Freedom (MasterCard or Visa) has no annual fee. Second, I haven’t had the Chase Sapphire Preferred MasterCard, so cancelling the Visa version will open up the possibility to earn the bonus on the MasterCard in the future.
I was excited to see that Kroger brought back the 4x fuel points for gift card purchases this month which goes nicely with the Chase Freedom 5% cash back offer. The 4x fuel points is only valid from March 3 through March 30, 2013. This is making gas purchases a little less painful at the pump!
The Bottom Line
Today I purchased $250 of Target gift cards which I will use to by groceries and baby items that I would have purchased anyway. I received 1,000 Kroger fuel points which provided $1 off per gallon up to 35 gallons of gas = $35 savings!
I used a card pay for the gift cards that I have been trying to hit spending threshold with and then I used my MasterCard Chase Freedom card to pay for the discounted gas which will get me 5% cash back on my Chase card!

Depending on how Kroger has ‘coded’ their gas station, it’s possible it won’t be recognized as a gas station by the credit card companies. I’m not sure about Chase, but I’ve had this problem at several Kroger gas locations with my Costco AMEX.

Kroger in DFW area are not participating in the 4x promo, only 2x, just tried it. 4x was last month. Also in January I used my Freedom card for gas at Kroger, it showed up as “Kroger Fuel #xxxx” but didn’t get the 5x points. Sent secure message to Chase – waiting for a response.

Just got a response from Chase. “Kroger Fuel” does count as gas station. But surprisingly some “Starbucks #xxxx” got categorized as “Quick Payment Service – Fast Food Restaurants” – no bonus and some Starbucks did get the bonus.
