All-male gatherings making a comeback – as seen on Oprah

Posted by: PointsWizard

Read More in: Oprah, travel

“SEATTLE – Guys-only gatherings — from informal poker nights to organized Rat Pack-esque Vegas vacations — are nothing new.

But after years of being out of favor, they’re finding a renewed respectability among younger males and businesses eager to market to them.Travel agencies such as I’m In! and Kayak.com have begun promoting guys-only vacations — or “mancations” — to places such as Mexico and Hawaii. Last summer, a few guys from Avedesian’s poker night took their first all-male vacation together. Now they plan “to make the mancation an annual tradition,” Avedesian says.Last month, a Seattle group called “Guys Night Out” organized a steak-and-scotch dinner for men to raise money for charity. And Spike TV has successfully traded on the appeal of programming designed by guys, for guys.

Even when it seemed that fraternal orders would become extinct as their members died off, the organizations are now drawing a younger generation.Chris Moore, 42, a Seattle businessman, and six male friends recently joined the Ballard chapter of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. One of the many reasons for joining was “a chance to hang out with the guys,” Moore says.Today, all-female groups outnumber all-male groups.

Dr. Warren Farrell, co-author of “Does Feminism Discriminate Against Men?” and one-time professor at the University of California and Georgetown University, says that ratio is as high as 100 female groups to every male group.Given those statistics, it’s not surprising that the social pendulum is beginning to swing back, clearing the way for advertisers and a new generation of men to reclaim the guys night out.

“The mere presence of a woman in a group of heterosexual men changes the entire energy,” says Robert Glover, a Bellevue, Wash.-based therapist and author of “No More Mr. Nice Guy.”That happens for two reasons: First, men are biologically inclined to make themselves attractive to females, even if there is no immediate possibility of mating with her. And second, most men in our society were socialized by women, since most day-care providers and elementary-school teachers are female. When you take out that X-factor — or, rather, the XX-chromosome factor — “there’s suddenly no need to get approval. Men don’t need to censor themselves around other men. It’s freeing.”It’s also therapeutic, said Farrell, who has debated men’s issues on CNN News, ABC’s “20/20″ and “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”" ( via chicagotribune.com)

For Las Vegas concierges, no request too crazy

Posted by: PointsWizard

Read More in: travel

“Where else but in Las Vegas would a concierge desk have a guest request a bathtub full of goat’s milk (the hotel didn’t comply) and another call for a stuffed gorilla to surprise the guest’s beloved? In the city that never blushes, outlandish requests and earnest largesse are the order of the day, every day, dozens of times a day. (Nothing lewd, mind you. If it’s not legal, the concierge desk won’t do it.)

“We call them ‘wow’ moments,” says Lee Ann Pearce, concierge supervisor at the Wynn Las Vegas, referring to the most challenging and colorful requests. If you can imagine it, the Wynn’s 28 concierges have probably heard it. They handle an average of 1,000 calls a day.

At the Hard Rock, where the hip and trendy gravitate, more bizarre requests have crossed the desk, including a request for Oompa Loompas at a party. Yes, they managed to find actors to do this. No, it wasn’t anything dirty.

Another strange and memorable request: “One guy called us and ordered a mariachi band to follow him around the casino all night while he gambled,” says longtime concierge Esteban Rey.” (via latimes.com)

How to BEAT priceline.com

Read More in: DEALS, priceline

“If you’re a frequent user of Priceline like I am, you know there are bidding restrictions.

These restrictions can lead to overbidding. You may still get a pretty good deal, but not the lowest rock-bottom price that Priceline has hidden in its computer system. You can’t simply increase your bid by $1 after each rejection. If you don’t want to change your dates of travel or hotel class or add an additional hotel zone, Priceline makes you wait 24 hours before you can bid again.

But there is a way to manipulate your bidding, find the cheapest price offered, get around the 24-hour rule and stay exactly in the area you want. ”[Via komotv.com/news]

INCREDIBLE HOTEL PRESIDENTIAL SUITES

Posted by: PointsWizard

Read More in: Hotels, luxury

“ ”Presidential stories often resemble tall tales. Occasionally, however, the legends are true, as is the case with the slew of “Washington Slept Here” signs that dot much of the Northeast.“George Washington believed part of his job was to unify the 13 colonies,” says Bill Fawcett, author of “Oval Office Oddities: An Irreverent Collection of Presidential Follies and Foibles.”

“He traveled extensively and met with the local leaders, businessmen and townspeople. He would move on the next day. But he spent more than a third of his term traveling and slept at between 800 and 1,000 places in the 13 colonies while he was president. A lot of those ‘Washington Slept Here’ signs are accurate. Most of the spots our first president laid his head were likely small houses and inns. .”

“The term ‘presidential suite’ came from the European tradition of royal suites,” says Fawcett. “We didn’t have royals, so we called the best room in the house the Presidential Suite. A president doesn’t have to stay there, and many of them may never have had one stay there.”Some hotels use the term as inspiration, not proof of political pedigree. The presidential suite at the Ritz-Carlton in Palm Beach, for example, is decorated with shoes from designer Robert Tabor that were inspired by various First Ladies. The Jackie Kennedy shoe features a ‘60s style square-toe covered in pink (like her famous wool suit), topped with a JFK political button and a heel that’s shaped like one of her pillbox hats.Others serve as sober monuments to presidential legacies, such as the newly renovated U.S. Grant Hotel in San Diego, which Ulysses S. Grant Junior built in honor of his father.Of course, there are several presidential suites in which our country’s leaders have actually stayed.

In New York, the Waldorf=Astoria, part of the Waldorf=Astoria Collection, rightly boasts that every president since Herbert Hoover has slept in its presidential suite. The opulent maze of eight rooms features four bedrooms and baths, a formal dining room, a living room with a fireplace and even includes some signature items donated by former presidents, including one of John F. Kennedy’s rocking chairs. And every president since Franklin Pierce has also ensconced themselves in the nearly 3,000-square-foot, marble-decked presidential suite at the Willard in Washington, D.C.” (via forbestraveler.com)

Wow Factor -This resort has it all

Imagine a resort with many interconnecting pools, a lazy river, boat rides, beach, wave pool, beds by the pool, train rides, kayaks, 18-hole par 71 golf course , spa, up to date gym, kids club , etc.

We just spent a week at Grand Mayan Resort in Nuevo Vallarta Mexico (10 min ride  from Puerto Vallarta Airport). The grounds are spacious, uncrowded, and beautiful. The swimming pool area is surrounded by a long “Lazy River”, where you can float around, swim or walk. There are a number of restaurant and snack bars choices. Many kids were at the pools but because there are so many pools the adults had no trouble finding pools of their own with swim up bars.

You can book the Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta online at expedia, orbitz, Wyndham Hotels or The Registry Collection®. The  rooms are studio, 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom. If you or someone you know belongs to a timeshare exchange company like RCI, SFX or TPI you may be able to exchange into this fabulous resort.
