After many years of collecting United Airlines MileagePlus miles with their United Airlines Visa Card I finally called it quits and cancelled it.

You ask why? How many times can you be turned down for frequent flyer tickets because there are no seats available or it’s double miles or nothing?

How many times can you be turned down for Star Alliance Airlines partners FREE SEATS because there is a limit imposed by United on those as we have learned recently?

What’s the use of the Star Alliance if you can earn miles but can’t get FREE SEATS I’m specifically referring to you United Airlines (freezing seats on US Airways and Air Canada)

In addition more things to infuriate a consumer
-no first class NYC to LAX then LAX to Cabo San Lucas or NYC to San Francisco then San Francisco to Cabo
-only coach on above flights with not much time between flights. Of course nothing on partners using other cites
-no seats from gateway (US Airways- Philadelphia and United- Washington and Chicago )airports to London or Rome or back from Barcelona on an United or partner itinerary without 2 stops

Why collect useless miles?
Why do I need United Airlines when I can just get it from American Airlines and have no problem?

Is United Airlines becoming as bad as Continental Airlines or is United Airlines worse?
I know people get seats on Continental Airlines problem is in 15 recent different attempts I have actually gotten tickets twice and that was at the double miles rate.

I collected miles in good faith, and now they are basically USELESS

To make matters worse United Airlines and Continental Airlines are getting together in the “Star Alliance”
- How frustrating two airlines joining and from whom getting a saver ticket from is like getting blood from a stone.

When is the public going to say no I’ve had enough – then stop collecting miles, cut up credit cards and let the airlines get the message
How about a Congressional investigation?

I’m not interested in hearing about yield management or when seats are released arguments, or what special things they do for very frequent flyers – they should stop playing games.
I want to book a seat in economy or business  without this nonsense. The airlines make  money from the miles they sell to Chase Bank, just like they make money from frequent flyers who buy tickets.

So goodbye United Airlines Visa after many, many, many years.
Continental Airlines Mastercard you just may be next- I’ll give you a few more tries. My patience is wearing thin.

Over at the Points Wizard, they have uncovered the real flaw in United Airlines “Mileage Plus” program, and by extension the credit cards offering “Mileage Plus” miles. They are impossible to use:

I dropped all mileage cards and going for cash rebates. I use the rebate to hunt down good deals. All in all way ahead of points and no hassle !!!

Costco AMEX card has best program got $700 back last year with good hunting got 2 rt to Europe for $1000 so only cost me $300.

I did cancel my UAL visa and started using AX, but gave it one more chance since I already had over 100K and I’m taking a trip to Europe next year. I haven’t been overseas in a long time due to salary cuts and now I want to get my money from this plan. I have PAID for their Visa, and I PAID alot of money to UAL to build miles when I could have gone non-stop on other airlines. Last time I tried to use miles to go overseas for my company, I even wrote to the Attorney General’s office and no one did anything. I’ve heard every rotten explanation there is and I think a class action lawsuit is going to be the only way to get resolution. A business class ticket to London or Madrid is worth a few grand and if I don’t get my seat next year exactly when I want it – on the Star Alliance – because I’m going into Gatwick, I’m calling up a few lawyers.

I just quit the loyalty program with Delta. They just cancelled 33,000+ without warning and I immediately contacted them to see what we could do in that I was dealing with a sick husband and he had recently died. They told me tough luck. Now I won’t fly them as I have many other choices. The United Visa card is impossible to use and I am getting ready to quit that too. One poster said that American works well and I think that Alaska does too. I will investigate.

I agree how impossible it is to get anywhere decent using our United Mileage Points. Never any seats, points have increased to fly International…blah blah blah. I’ve had it with United Visa and it is getting cut up just as soon as we receive our Capital One Visa…so long United, it’s been a painful 10 years with you. Losers!!!

I just tried to book award seats to Portland Oregon from Philadelphia 3 months away and came up empty. I now can only get 40000 mile seats despite the fact that partner US Air’s 1 non-stop daily to Portland has many empty seats on many days. United sucks and I too will be ditching the credit card and their service.

We just flew from St. Louis to O’Hare to Beijing to Pusan, Korea. Two weeks in advance we called United to upgrade on the leg from O’Hare to Beijing. They said they could only guarentee the STL to O’Hare leg for upgrade…gee, thanks, upgrading for a 45 minute flight. They said they could request upgrade on the long leg but whether we got it or not we would be charged $400 apiece ($800) plus 25,000 miles. We did not request upgrade at that time and waited to get to the airport in STL. We finally got upgraded in Chicago but only after two trips to the check-in counter at an over-crowded gate. I’ve said I’m done with United for a long time but now I’m serious. I just don’t know anyone that is less horrible.

United is the absolute WORST. To get an upgradeable fare it costs three times what an economy ticket costs, then you immediately find out there are no upgrades available!
When you try to use miles for a business class seat, same smell, no seats available. Yet if you check on Travelocity using “buy a business class” selection, you see it’s totally wide open.
Delta absolutely sucks, too, so what’s left? American? Thanks to the Airline Deregulation Act we are now in a totally non-competitive environment. Thanks a lot, congress!
