Today, AirTran, which also flies nonstop from Detroit to Orlando, released their flights for our travel dates. Delta, as I expected, modified their fares. The Delta flights initially cost more, but once you factored in the baggage fees ($20/bag each way on AirTran), the prices were almost identical. Which means Delta, which is where all my frequent flyer miles are, had the edge.

But there’s a problem. We’re all flying down together, but we’re not all flying back together. DW and I are coming home after a week, but son and family are staying a few extra days. So I called Delta to find out how to handle this.

The reservation agent told me there was nothing she could do. It had to be booked as two separate reservations, and the free bag perk only applies to the party that includes the cardholder. So only two out of six of us get to check our bags for free. Suddenly, the pricing is no longer competitive.

I booked our flights with AirTran. Not only was it cheaper, the flight times were better. (Our flight down leaves Detroit at 12:10, while the cheapest Delta flight doesn’t take off until 5:43.) Funny thing is, I still paid for the tickets with the Delta AmEx. I got it under a sign-up offer where I get 20K FF miles for my first purchase, and another 10K if I spend over $1000 in the first three months. Scottevest travel clothes include reasonably stylish coats that are designed to hold a carry-on’s worth of items. The company claims the jackets prevent potential pickpocketing by having interior compartments, and make it easy to go through airport security since you can remove your jacket without taking everything out of its pockets.

No matter what type of coat you’re traveling with, wear it on the plane and make the most of the pockets by packing them with any items you’ll use during the flight, such as books, snacks, and music devices.

Reuse clothing. Packing neutral-colored clothes (think blacks, whites, and grays) makes it easy to mix and match; a couple of interchangeable tops and bottoms can create infinite combinations.

Pack the right fabrics. Worried about wrinkles? Remember, some fabrics travel better than others. You can purchase clothes made with travel in mind, but chances are there are items in your own closet that will do the trick.

Pick knits over woven items, and opt for blended fabrics, especially those with a bit of spandex or polyester.

Do a load of laundry. If you don’t have access to water to wash your clothes, you’re likely not the type of traveler that’s concerned with having a new outfit for every hour of the day. Washing, whether by hand, at the hotel, or around the corner at a Laundromat is a quick way to get more mileage out of the same outfits.

Leave (some of) the toiletries behind. If you’re staying at a hotel, chances are you’ll find soap, shampoo, and conditioner in your room. Many hotels also offer extras such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, and shaving cream upon request.

Check, and recheck, the weather. Lay out everything you think you need for your trip at least one week before you leave. As it gets closer, look at current weather reports to see temperatures and forecasts for your destination, and determine what items you can definitely remove. The U.S. Department of Transportation in October clarified an existing rule that carriers cover all expenses incurred by passengers because of lost or delayed luggage up to $3,300 per traveler on domestic flights…

The department noted that several airlines had policies that would reimburse travelers only for essential items bought after 24 hours, and only on the outbound legs of their trips…

“Travelers should not have to pay for toiletries or other necessities while they wait for baggage misplaced by airlines,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a written statement issued then. “We expect airlines to comply with all of our regulations and will take enforcement action if they do not.”

Airlines may also offer travelers whose bags don’t arrive with them some complimentary emergency items. Delta, for instance, will often give passengers a kit containing a toothbrush, toothpaste and mouthwash.

Despite the federal rules, airlines generally state in their contracts of carriage that they won’t reimburse passengers for the loss of electronics, or other high-value items.

Once a delayed bag arrives, carriers typically deliver it to its owner. But Southwest will give a travel credit that can be used on a future flight if a passenger picks up the bag.” ( via  usatoday.com) by Charisse Jones
