“Verizon on Tuesday announced it had partnered with Skype to bring cheap international calls and Skype PC calls to select Verizon smartphone users…
Starting in March, users with nine Verizon smartphones will be able to make calls using Skype Mobile on Verizon’s high-rated voice network without using any voice minutes…

Skype users will be able to make unlimited Skype-to-Skype calls using their Verizon Wireless service plan and make international calls at Skype’s SkypeOut rates, which are much lower than Verizon’s…

The app will run in the background, letting Verizon subscribers receive Skype calls on their phones as well. Users will need both voice and data plans to use the app, but Skype calls will not use voice minutes.

Several great Verizon phones will work with the new Skype service. Newer favorites like the Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Eris, BlackBerry Storm2, and the BlackBerry Tour 9630 will work with Skype Mobile. Other models like the reliable Curve 8530 and the upcoming Motorola Devour, plus the discontinued BlackBerry Curve 8330 and Curve 8830 will also be part of the new service.

If you already have a compatible Verizon phone, great. But if you’re thinking of buying a new handset that will take advantage of the new Skype-Verizon service, the touch screen Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Eris, and BlackBerry Storm2 would all serve you well. ” ( via pcmag.com ) by Sean Ludwig

“Your phone runs apps. Cool apps. Fun apps. Free apps. Even if it isn’t an iPhone…

The popularity of Apple’s App Store vaulted mobile apps to prominence, but techies know that mobile phones have been tiny PCs for years now…

The difference today is the buzz and visibility around apps. The idea that you can add to your phone’s powers has gone mainstream…

With 100,000 apps, the iPhone certainly has the most apps available, but there’s no lack of choice on other platforms… Google’s Android phones have more than 10,000. There are thousands for BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Symbian phones, and a couple of hundred for the Palm Pre and Pixi.

Even simple phones like the Motorola RAZR can get into the app game.

We’ve sifted through a huge stack of apps to find the best free ones for almost every phone. The only folks left out are owners of Verizon and T-Mobile non-smartphones like the LG enV3 and Nokia 5310. Those carriers forbid you from installing free, third-party apps, although they make a limited selection of paid apps available.

Our list totals 100 apps: 40 for the iPhone, 20 each for BlackBerry and Android, 10 for Windows Mobile, and 10 combined for Palm WebOS, Symbian, and non-smartphones. The iPhone, of course, has more apps than anyone else. BlackBerry is the USA’s dominant smartphone platform. Android is gaining market share while Windows Mobile is losing it. And while Symbian may be popular overseas, those phones are seldom seen on American shores.

The President-elect tells ABC News’ Barbara Walters in an interview airing Wednesday night that he’s trying to talk the Secret Service and others into letting him keep his wireless device.

Authorities fear hackers could break into his inbox and harvest data that’s potentially damaging to national security.

“This is a problem,” Obama said with a laugh in the interview. Still, he thinks keeping his BlackBerry at hand will allow him to keep a better handle on his job.
“I’m negotiating to figure out how can I get information from outside of the 10 or 12 people who surround my office in the White House.

Because one of the worst things I think that could happen to a President is losing touch with what people are going through day to day,” he told Walters ” ( via nydailynews.com) by BY MICHAEL MCAULIFF-DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

“The new touchscreen Blackberry has “intuitive touschscreen” that can be pressed down like buttons a keyboard, joining a crowded market for new smartphones

A new touchscreen BlackBerry phone is launched today, ready to battle with the likes of Apple’s iPhone and the new “Google phone” in the run up to Christmas.

The BlackBerry Storm aims to blow away its rivals with an “intuitive touchscreen” which can be pressed down like buttons on a keyboard, unlike other touchscreen mobiles where users tap the unresponsive glass.

The Times was granted a brief look at the new phone yesterday. With its neat metallic edges and rubber sides, the Storm looks sleek and stylish, but is also easy to hold and use. However, at first glace it is thicker and heavier than rival devices.

The new BlackBerry joins a crowded market for touchscreen phones, which is dominated by Apple’s iPhone. Nokia and Google have released new smartphones in recent weeks, but industry experts consider the iPhone to be the “sexiest” touchscreen and has set the bar high for similar devices.

BlackBerry phones have long been seen as an unglamorous device, the reliable companion of office workers and travelling salesman who mainly use it check and reply to emails on the go.

Now, in an effort to take on the likes of the iPhone, the sleek new BlackBerry Storm has the ability to download music and movies, which can be played on the device.

Just like other touchscreen devices, the Storm takes high quality digital photographs, has a built in GPS system and gives users fast internet access to websites such as YouTube and Facebook.” ( via timesonline.co.uk) by Murad Ahmed

Now, in part because of pressure from lawsuits filed challening the practice, all four major U.S. wireless carriers are softening the blow.

Verizon Wireless was the first to prorate early termiantion fees last year. at&t Wireless did so in October. T-Mobile and Sprint now also say they will start prorating their early termination fees in the first half of next year.

The fees aren’t gone. But the amount will decrease the closer you get to contract end date. Sprint also says it will allow allow users to change plans without renewing the contract, something Verizon started doing in October.

All the moves are user friendly. Look for more signs of “friendliness” as use of unlocked phones starts to spread, open source Android phones start to make their appearance and, just maybe, a new carrier decides to push the envelope even more.”
[Via ipcarrier.blogspot.com] published Nov. 9, 2007
