Red Rock Canyon and Korean tacos with 2 great bloggers

After my Wynn-view stay at the Clarion, a black ride rolled up and out popped the smiles of great blogger couple and dear friends, Jimmy of TravelByPoints and Prana of TravelWhimsy.

Red Rock Canyon is so close to Las Vegas it is embarrassing that I had not made it on prior trips. My first thought was “Ayer’s Rock (Uluru) without the flights and exorbitant cost.” We had an excellent hike, my fault for chatting so much that I led everyone into a bramble.

Our midday repast of Korean tacos at KoMex Express was excellent. Anything with bulgogi is outstanding, and the kimchi fried rice with tofu is a guilty pleasure. Wash it down with the Brewed Mango Passionfruit Unsweetened Decaffeinated Iced Tea, a verbal mouthful and quite tasty, only $1.50 with free refills.

I visit RRC each time in LV since I first did it while staying at Red Rock Casino, Resort and Spa (on a discounted Choice Privileges dela no less). It is beautiful, especially at sunset.

Red Rock Canyon is one of the many interesting sites that are close to Las Vegas. In fact, my favorite thing to do when I visit Vegas, is to get OUT of Vegas into the desolate beauty of the nearby mountains and canyons. When I was a geology graduate student we used to cram about 5 people into cheap hotel rooms, eat at the cheap buffets in town, and then go rock-hounding in the surrounding countryside. Thanks for bringing back these wonderful memories.

We had the perfect combination that day – beautiful weather and great company! It made me resolve to get out to Red Rock and hike more trails this year. Sometimes we are so busy traveling we neglect the beauty in our own backyard. Next time you visit, we’ll hit Mt Charleston and take you on a pilgrimage to the oldest living thing in Nevada, a 3,000+ year old Bristlecone pine.
