A touch of travel nostalgia

Author: Kiwi Flyer, March 27th, 2008

Remember the days when there were no airbridges, no business or first class, no frequent flyer programs and no Flyer Talk?  Travel in the olden days wasn’t all bad though.  If you can fondly remember watching with interest the destination board clacking up the next flights and trying to guess what exotic places people were flying to, then this thread on airports that still have clacking boards will be for you.

Confession is good for the soul

Author: Kiwi Flyer, March 27th, 2008

Well, maybe not.  But it does make us feel better about our own silly travel mistakes.  Check out, and contribute to, the thread on the most foolish error/omission you’ve made while travelling.

A Return Trip for Propellor Aircraft?

Author: Brian Cohen, March 24th, 2008

It appears as though High gas prices aid prop-plane comeback, according to the linked article.

There is a chance that your next flight could be on a propeller-powered aircraft rather than on a regional jet aircraft.

Is this really the case, or is this story simply nothing more than spin?

Yes, I do realise that I spelled the word propellor as propellor and propeller. Both spellings are acceptable. Yes, I do realize that I spelled the word realize as realise.

Anyway, see how FlyerTalk members go round-for-round and propel yourself to this FlyerTalk thread. The discussion could get your motor running…

Suspicious about taxes on award tickets?

Author: Kiwi Flyer, March 23rd, 2008

You are not alone.  Some FTers on the bmi forum are documenting taxes on paid tickets and the same ticket as an award.  Unfortunately the tax figure is not always the same (somehow only ever ends up being higher).

Calendar for FlyerTalk Member Gatherings and Events

Author: Brian Cohen, March 22nd, 2008

Poor Jenbel.

This FlyerTalk member, who is also one of the moderators of the CommunityBuzz! forum, laments how FlyerTalk members do not use the Member Do’s and Events calendar enough for its intended purpose, according to what she posted here.

In fact, that is the reason why The Consolidated Do-List Thread was launched in the first place - because not nearly enough FlyerTalk members use the Member Do’s and Events calendar for its intended purpose, which would eliminate the need for The Consolidated Do-List Thread altogether.

Go ahead and either view or post to the Member Do’s and Events calendar today and meet some FlyerTalk members!

Knock ‘n’ Push

Author: Brian Cohen, March 21st, 2008

What do you think about housekeeping staff using the Knock ‘n’ Push technique?

What is the definition, you may ask?

According to FlyerTalk member mikeef, the Knock ‘n’ Push technique is described as: “Instead of the maid knocking, yelling “housekeeping,” waiting a few seconds for an answer and then opening the door, it has become increasingly common to knock and open the door without waiting for an answer.”

But wait: before you latch onto the “latch the door” argument or think that you have the answer locked with the “latch the door” solution, think again.

Why would FlyerTalk member obscure2k strongly recommend to “cut off your phone”?

Find out what FlyerTalk members are saying, including what they believe causes this problem and what LTSTDAOLTOIAC means, in the Annoying trends in hotel housekeeping: increased use of “knock ‘n push” thread.

For those of you who read the title of this posting and thought the topic had to do with something else, get your mind out of the gutter.

Lobsters, Statues, a Spear, a Goat, a Durian, and even the Kitchen Sink.

Author: Brian Cohen, March 19th, 2008

What do all of these items have in common?

Well, let’s put it another way:

What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen someone carry on?

This is with regard to what passengers carry onto airline flights.

Read the thread to see other strange sightings, or post there if you have a sighting of your own…

Let’s Meet at Chernobyl

Author: Brian Cohen, March 19th, 2008

The Who Will Be The Next FlyerTalk Member To Post? An OMNI Game -LIVE- CHERNOBYL DO 2009 thread simply proves that FlyerTalk members will meet just about anywhere in the world.

The core theme behind the ongoing continuing series of Who Will Be The Next FlyerTalk Member To Post? An OMNI Game gatherings of FlyerTalk members is to visit some of the most obscure and unusual places around the world. Past locations were El Paso, Texas in the United States, which occurred multiple times, and Ljubljana in Slovenia. Future locations under consideration include Yaoundé, Cameroon and Bratislava, Slovakia.

How would you react to meeting in such a place as Chernobyl? Isotope you would be up-and-atom, raring to attend. There is no reason to have a meltdown regarding such a meeting, as FlyerTalk members have this nucleus, a common bond, called travel, miles and points.

Yet Another Brooklyn Reality Tour: Date is Now Set!

Author: Brian Cohen, March 17th, 2008

FlyerTalk member dhammer53 probably did not realize that he started what is now a vaunted FlyerTalk tradition seven years ago when he launched the first Brooklyn Reality Tour in 2001.

Yes, he thought about ending it all last year. No, he was not contemplating suicide. He considered ending the tradition of hosting this annual event, which each year spawns a pilgrimage of FlyerTalk members from all over the world to the patch of land known as the borough of Brooklyn. There was even media coverage of the event one year!

I have yet to join a Brooklyn Reality Tour, but then again, I am originally from Brooklyn myself. Still, I would like to see how dhammer53 conducts a tour of our beloved home. If I do get to go on the tour, I have offered to assist with the tour in the future to give my perspective of the place where I grew up and lived for greater than 25 years. dhammer53 and I found out that we lived only a few miles apart when growing up.

Anyway, do not miss out on the opportunity to participate in the 8th annual Brooklyn Reality Tour. June 21, 2008 Saturday. Visit the thread for details on how to reserve your spot on the tour. However, please be aware that seats go fast, and the Brooklyn Reality Tour is always sold out every year.
