Nuts to You!

Posted on: May 25th, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

Is there a sliver of truth that there are many more almonds than cashews on some American Airlines flights, or is the observation rendered by FlyerTalk member ubercool simply peanuts?

In this thread, CCD is not the technological acronym for charged coupled device…

…and how did the topic in this thread get steered to marinated cheese, people “pistachioed off” at the lack of pistachio nuts, and the typhoon in Myanmar?

You have no idea what I am talking about, do you?

If your curiosity has been piqued, congratulations: you are therefore nuts enough to read the Should we have an AA Almond Index? thread.

Career Advice for Former Transportation Security Administration Officer

Posted on: May 24th, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

Normally, what is posted in the Travel Safety/Security forum can be brutal when it comes to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and its airport security policies. Typically, on any given day in this forum, there is a clear line between FlyerTalk members who are airline passengers on one side and FlyerTalk members who are Transportation Security Administration officers on the other side. Debates are heated, opinions are rooted by stubbornness, and frank arguments flare regularly.

However, the tone changes in the Leaving TSA……career advice….. thread where former Transportation Security Administration officer and FlyerTalk member Iworkhere solicits career advice. That clear divisive line is suddenly blurred and those who post in that thread are more than happy to offer assistance.

As is the typical basic FlyerTalk community spirit, it is great to see FlyerTalk members unite to help in a common cause.

FlyerTalk Ambassador Program

Posted on: May 24th, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

The TalkBoard of FlyerTalk is welcoming comments from all FlyerTalk members about a program which will be voted upon by TalkBoard members.

The FlyerTalk Ambassador Program will officially bestow volunteer FlyerTalk members as ambassadors of specific FlyerTalk forums where, amongst other duties, they will welcome new FlyerTalk members, have all FlyerTalk members feel more comfortable about participating in the FlyerTalk community, and be available to answer specific questions in and about a FlyerTalk forum in a positive and welcoming manner.

Is this a good idea? What do you think?

Please opine, as well as read what TalkBoard members and other FlyerTalk members have to say, in the Comments Welcome, Voting Underway – Flyertalk Ambassador Proposal thread.

What If You Commit a Minor Crime in a Foreign Country?

Posted on: May 23rd, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

FlyerTalk member Delta767 asks What If You Committ A Minor Crime In A Foreign Country?

I suppose this depends on what is considered a minor crime: shoplifting, speeding, petty theft, jaywalking? Would infractions such as speeding and jaywalking even be considered as crimes?

FlyerTalk member 797-3 warns not to “consider anything minor”. Reading the rest of that thread and the potential of what could happen to you in different countries can be quite intimidating, to say the least. There is even a hint that “officials will come up with reasons to try to get bribes out of you”, apparently even if you have committed no crime or infraction of any type.

Whatever your case may be, just be careful when you travel to other countries. I am happy to report that I have never had a problem when traveling to other countries in every continent except Antarctica.

No, I was not arrested for any crime in Antarctica. I meant that the only continent to which I have not been is Antarctica…

Are You a “Member” of the Status 500 Club?

Posted on: May 22nd, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

Fellow The Gate “blogger” and FlyerTalk member Kiwi Flyer is now a “member” of the Status 500 Club.

If you recently and unexpectedly became a “member” of the Status 500 Club, that is not a reason to celebrate. In fact, you are encouraged to report it here.

Which International Airport is the Least…well…International?

Posted on: May 22nd, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

This is an interesting question posed by FlyerTalk member dhuey.

There are international airports that would not otherwise qualify as international airports if it were not for that one regularly-scheduled regional jet flight once per week just across the border into either Canada or Mexico, or if it did not receive that one charter flight once in a while from a different country. Some airports no longer have flights that serve international destinations, yet they keep the international designation in their official name.

Find out which international airports are just barely international airports in the Among “international” airports, which is the least international? thread.

This does pose yet another question, however: among international airlines, which is the least international?

This may be a good idea for a new FlyerTalk thread…

This is NOT a Pyramid Scheme: How to Get From Cairo to Sharm El-Shiek?

Posted on: May 22nd, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

FlyerTalk member onedog wants to know the best way to get from Cairo to Sharm El-Shiek – Planes, trains or automobiles?

I would normally say that something really sphynx around here if Egypt you out of the best way to travel from Cairo to Sharm El-Shiek, but then I would be in de-Nile.

I know – I realize I deserve a Red C for that one…

…anyway, just please read the thread if you happen to be in a similar situation.

You’re Pudding Me On!!!

Posted on: May 22nd, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

Delta Air Lines is apparently serving Pudding in the JFK CRC!, which is the Crown Room Club at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

Of course, FlyerTalk member thesaints would like to clarify that it is “not pudding, nor parfait: it is called mousse!”

Anyway, FlyerTalk member fly co to see the yanks says that Delta Is Serving Pudding. Will Continental Follow?

Are these FlyerTalk members getting their just desserts? Do airlines believe that desserts will keep their most loyal customers from deserting them?

Boston-New York: $1.

Posted on: May 21st, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

One United States dollar may not be able to buy much anymore – and these days it seems to buy less and less with every day that passes – but it can get you a fare between Boston and New York.

Find out more information in this thread, which even includes a favorable trip report.

US$15 Fee for Your FIRST Checked-In Bag on American Airlines

Posted on: May 21st, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

You read that correctly.

If you only have one bag to check in on your American Airlines flight, be prepared to surrender US$15.

When does the fee for checking your first piece of luggage take effect on American Airlines flights? Will there be repercussions regarding lines at airport security checkpoints? How are FlyerTalk members reacting to this news? Will other airlines follow suit? Are there any other fees proposed for the future? What other actions is American Airlines proposing to implement to survive in a competitive business climate with soaring fuel costs?

Please read the AA to charge for FIRST checked in Bag, AMR-huge capacity reduction to domestic fleet-and $15 fee for FIRST checked bag, and American to charge for first checked bag threads.
