The 131-Pound Hamburger

Posted on: October 20th, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

That is not the cost of a hamburger in the United Kingdom.

Rather, that is estimated 131-pound weight of what is unofficially the biggest hamburger in the United States of America that is featured in the Chef Chomps a 15 lb. Hamburger! thread.

I like hot sauce on my hamburger. I wonder how many gallons of Cholula hot sauce this gargantuan hamburger would require for my taste?

Flatulence: It’s a Gas, Part II

Posted on: October 19th, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

Flatulence is not a new topic here at The Gate but, at the risk of once again being anal about it, we decided to probe into this topic a little deeper rather than fall behind on what FlyerTalk members are thinking — and passing.

The Audacious and Unmitigated Flatulence thread in the Continental OnePass forum explores the flatulence issue in a way that will — er…shall we say — retain your attention, unlike the fact that offenders of the flatulence issue fail to retain their toxic gaseous creations to themselves…

Toeing The Line at an Airport Lounge Can Hurt!

Posted on: October 18th, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

FlyerTalk member mrviognier found out that getting injured at the American Airlines Admiral’s Club can be a rather painful step in the wrong direction.

Although the lounge staff was professional, diligent and quick in responding to the toe of mrviognier getting injured, is mrviognier entitled to compensation?

The discussion quickly evolves into other topics, including whether or not sandals are appropriate footwear for travel as an airline passenger, and whether it was the entire toe that was ripped off of the foot of mrviognier, the nail of the toe, or something else entirely.

What do you think other FlyerTalk members posted when they opined? On whom are they fingering the blame? Who should foot the bill for the injury? Is anyone solely responsible for the incident? Get instep by finding out in the My Left Foot: Getting Hurt @ ORD Admiral’s Club…Suggestions? thread.

Southwest Airlines Actually Posted a LOSS!

Posted on: October 17th, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

Will the sun now rise in the west? Are blizzards finally coming to Aruba?

Although Southwest Airlines says that its streak of profitable quarters remains alive at 70, it officially posted a loss yesterday for the first time in almost 18 years for the third quarter of 2008.

The approximately $120,000,000.00 loss was fueled by accounting charges related to its fuel-hedging program.

Before you speculate on whether this means that the low-cost carrier model of airline operations is in jeopardy, you would first be best advised to read the Southwest Airlines loses $120M in 3Q on fuel charge thread for details, facts and opinions.

How to ride a DC3?

Posted on: October 16th, 2008 by: Kiwi Flyer

AA since 85 asks how to get a ride on a DC3?  If you can help, or are also interested, please post in this thread.

Coincidentally, I was recently checking out an option to charter a DC3 for a future Kiwi Do, as there are 2 places in New Zealand that have operational DC3′s for charters and scenic flights.

Number One On the Value-of-Miles Charts This Week…

Posted on: October 16th, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

Perhaps we need Casey Kasem to announce the rankings of the value of miles earned in the frequent flier programs of the six legacy carriers in the United States in the Rank the value of miles on the 6 legacy carriers thread as posted by FlyerTalk members.

Is an American Airlines AAdvantage mile worth more than a Delta SkyMile?  Which airline’s frequent flier program mile is worth the most and consistently ranks on top?

The Award Ticket Costs More Than The Actual Airfare!

Posted on: October 15th, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

What would you rather do?

  • Use 25,000 Delta Air Lines SkyMiles and pay $308.71, or
  • Pay $285.80 and earn approximately 2,000 Delta Air Lines SkyMiles?

Both scenarios are for the same exact flight at the same time on the same day.

Experiences in a Small Town in China: Dog Neck, Chicken Feet, Stomach, Sheep’s Brains, Silkworm Larva and The Latest Flat Screen Monitor

Posted on: October 15th, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

We may never know if FlyerTalk member phillipas was able to stomach the stomach that was served for dinner, but the Your Worst Hotel Experience In China thread is a trip report of sorts where phillipas and other FlyerTalk members relate their unique experiences when visiting China.

Well, at least we know that, according to phillipas, the sheep’s brains that was served in a somewhat-charred sheep’s head was actually good to eat, as well as the dog neck and silk worm larva that FlyerTalk member anacapamalibu consumed on a different trip to China.

Make sure you munch and snack on some vacuum-packed chicken feet as you read through the thread.

Space Invaders at Southwest Airlines

Posted on: October 13th, 2008 by: Brian Cohen

I am not referring to the classic arcade game Space Invaders.

Rather, it appears that passengers of other airlines are treating the upgraded Southwest Airlines gate areas as lounges by invading their space, taking advantage of such complimentary amenities as leather chairs with power jacks and high definition wide-screen televisions.

Naturally, it stands to reason that Southwest Airlines passengers want to keep the space invaders out.

Read the A new phenomenon.. The Southwest gate area intruders! thread to see what ideas and opinions have been posted regarding controlling this situation.
