Mileage Runs: Sick and Tired

Author: Brian Cohen, May 31st, 2009

This is not about being sick and tired of mileage runs, but rather what if one is sick and tired: should one still attempt to go on or finish a mileage run?

Not feeling well, FlyerTalk member cobrax333 seeks advice from fellow FlyerTalk members about what to do in the Last MR Tomorrow and I’m sick! thread.

…so how important are miles, points and elite status as compared to the condition of one’s health, anyway?!?

US$59.00 for Room Service Dinner

Author: Brian Cohen, May 30th, 2009

Imagine paying US$59.00, including taxes and gratuities, for a dinner of pan-roasted salmon, braised short ribs, a baked potato, a small dinner roll and some butter. The salmon came with no garnish or lemon wedge. In fact, a picture of the piece of salmon can be found in the I had to laugh… why I hate room service. thread.

One FlyerTalk member explained that free plate rental was included in the cost.

Of course — or more than one course — FlyerTalk members compare their expensive room service in Starwood hotel properties stories, such as US$60.00 for a chicken Caesar salad.

However, is US$60.00, including taxes and gratuities, unreasonable for room service? Does presentation play as important a role as the quality and flavor of the food? Is there really more to the cost of room service?

Airplane Toilet Paper

Author: Brian Cohen, May 29th, 2009

Try to tear FlyerTalk members away from the airplane toilet paper thread and they may wipe you out and ask “Wad are you doing?!?”

Not trying to rip off anyone, The Gate is on a roll regarding the efficiency of toilet paper and would be in arrears if this important topic were not discussed. We would be flush with embarrassment if we did otherwise.

Now, back to the lavatory…

Hot Towels

Author: Kiwi Flyer, May 28th, 2009

When someone mentions hot towels in business/first class I think of white cloth, usually damp but maybe dry or maybe soggy. Several FTers however mention other added extras they’ve experienced in nasty hot towels. How can I ever look at a hot towel the same way again?

Dining Out: Eat Alone or Meet Someone With Whom to Eat?

Author: Brian Cohen, May 28th, 2009

There are people who travel alone and find themselves at a restaurant dining by themselves.

While FlyerTalk member shawbridge is not adverse to eating alone when dining in a restaurant, shawbridge does not enjoy it as much as when eating with someone else.

The question asked by shawbridge is what, if anything, do you do if you

  • Do not feel like eating alone; and
  • Have not or cannot arrange to have someone with whom to eat?

Would you prefer to meet people to eat dinner with when traveling alone?

Should the Airline Industry Be Regulated Once Again?

Author: Brian Cohen, May 27th, 2009

This is a contentious issue, as there are both disadvantages and advantages — as well as a wide range of differing opinions and commentary — pertaining to this topic.

Some FlyerTalk members would argue that due to de-regulation, service is worse, quality is lower, the disparity in the cost of airfares between first class and coach class has broadened, and smaller communities with equally small airports have lost airline service altogether.

On the other hand, some FlyerTalk members attribute lower airfares overall as a result of de-regulation. Would frequent flier loyalty programs have flourished had the airline industry remained regulated?

What do you think: Should the Airline Industry be Re-Regulated?

They Give Their 2¢ About Being Charged 4¢

Author: Brian Cohen, May 26th, 2009

Continental Airlines waived the change fee of an uncoming round-trip flight to Amsterdam because FlyerTalk member arisaa has the flu, but still charged arisaa a total of $0.04 difference in fares.

Some FlyerTalk members cannot resist the opportunity to post comments of levity regarding this transaction, and at least one FlyerTalk member explains a possible reason as to why the four-cent charge was implemented in the first place.

Dry hotel

Not the alcohol-free kind of dry! What do you do if water is off at the hotel for some hours?

How Many Commercial Airlines Have You Flown?

Author: Brian Cohen, May 25th, 2009

Think about it: on how many commercial airlines which you have been a passenger in your entire life have you flown?

While a number of FlyerTalk members have been on greater than 50 different airlines as passengers and a few claim greater than 90, one FlyerTalk member has been a passenger on 132 different airlines.

What is your list of the Most Commercial Airlines Flown and Dodgiest Airline Flown?
