Do you buy carbon offsets for your flying?

Author: Kiwi Flyer, November 27th, 2009

They are there on most airline booking pages, and can also be bought separately from air tickets. How many people, particularly heavy flyers on FT, actually click to buy a carbon offset? Judging by the discussion so far, not many. Is that right?

  1. Ted S. Says:

When I opened up this discussion on FlyerTalk, I got barraged by so many global warming deniers that, in spite of my attempts to keep it on topic, a moderator had to move it to OMNI.

I offset my flying emissions but not on the spot when I book. I do it once or twice a year in a lump.

In all fairness, there was a NY Times article the other day saying that offsets aren’t all they’re cracked up to be because they either a) take too long to offset the emissions, or b) encourage people to fly. My take: FTers are going to fly one way or the other; they might as well do it. It’s more responsible than doing nothing at all.
