The news is still breaking at this point, but discussions pertaining to the major earthquake which struck Japan — with a reported magnitude of 8.9 on the Richter scale — is sending tremors throughout FlyerTalk and the frequent traveler community:

The 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake Off Coast of Japan, reported earlier this week by The Gate, apparently was only a precursor to this most recent earthquake, whose epicenter was 231 miles or 373 kilometres away from Tokyo and caused extensive damage, the reported closing of major airports in Japan, and power outages, as well as flash flooding caused by the resulting tsunamis.

Tsunami warnings have been issued for other countries in the Pacific Rim.

There is no word yet on any casualties at this time.

Hawaii tsunami expected to hit in next few minutes in Hawaii at 5am California time at 3 to 6 ft.

Monterey has tsunami warning for 7:55 am with estimate about 1 foot wave.

Footage from Japan is incredible devastation from tsunamis, let alone quake structural damage.

I live outside tokyo in Saitama, and it was a surprisingly strong quake. The damage in this area is pretty minimal, just some broken windows and such.

I hope people north of here are ok.

  3. Andrew said,

NHK just reported that 95 people are confirmed dead, but reports that an estimated 300 drown bodies are floating in the waters in Sendai city.

I just received 7am phone call at my home in Monterey with Emergency Broadcast System tsunami warning for all of Monterey County coastal areas. All beaches closed as of 7:30 am.

Time is 7:44 am for first waves. Most warning notices state 2 feet, but I read in last hour warning for 3.3 ft Santa Cruz and 4.3 ft in Rio Del Mar in Santa Cruz County between Monterey and Santa Cruz.

  5. Ric Garrido said,

Tsunami a nonevent in Monterey, but Santa Cruz on the other side of Monterey Bay 40 miles away had a couple of dozen boats damaged by small surge.

Crescent City in northern California had a big surge that damaged a number of boats and docks in harbor. That is over 400 miles from Monterey.
