How to Dress Informally for a Cruise

When going on a cruise, how does one dress in an informal manner properly, especially if there are no formal nights planned on the particular cruise and the brochure states that dress is casual?

In the Informal Clothes for a Cruise thread, FlyerTalk members impart some valuable advice about how to not be caught with your pants down and say “Oh, shirt!!!” when being socked with the news that the attire you are wearing is not appropriate for that particular cruise.
