Apparently there are enough readers of Musings of the Global Traveller to warrant a request to make the blog carbon neutral. Something to do with power used by the host and computers of those reading the site, apparently. The scheme is free and designed to raise awareness of the issue.

Anyway, clearly this is mass marketed. If the sender of the email knew anything about Musings of the Global Traveller I’m sure they’d be more worried about the carbon footprints of all the travel I do and encourage in others.

I haven’t added their button, although I do offset some of my personal carbon emissions every year.  What are your thoughts?

I used to carbon offset, but don’t bother any more. Two things dissuaded me from continuing. First, I never felt really sure that buying offsets actually translated into anything. I decided I’d be better off going directly to a source – i.e. giving money to a charity that buys land to be protected as a wildlife habitat (and thus that green land providing a carbon scrub). Second, I figured I’d be better if I made changes in my life to reduce my carbon footprint overall, instead of “buying” my way out of it.

From my observations carbon offsetting companies are lucrative, which tells you how much of a margin this opportunistic business activity has.

I tried the carbon off-set but the people telling me that I had to do that were people who don’t travel as a way of life. Instead, I donate/purchase to organizations/people in places where I travel to help improve the way of life for people whose paths I’ve crossed.
