Last year Wendy Perrin asked her Perrin Post readers for their frequent flyer questions. 10 lucky readers won tickets to a preview of the Up in the Air movie starring George Clooney and got their questions answered by Randy Petersen, frequent flyer guru, with some help from others at Flyer Talk.
However, there were over 100 other great frequent flyer questions about programs, miles and status. There are some common themes to many questions and also some unique or quirky questions. With Wendy’s permission, I’ll be answering many of these questions over the coming weeks.

I’ve been a 1K member on United airlines for 6 years now. I just took a job in Canada and will be flying Air Canada overseas about 8-10 times a year. I would like to switch over to Air Canada’s Aeroplan, but don’t want to loose my status as a 100K mile/year flyer-any ideas?
Cheers,
Yarrow

@Yarrow Dornon – it is fairly simple to switch between Mileage Plus and Aeroplan because they are both in the same alliance and they both have calendar year elite status qualification periods. As long as you have requalified for 1K status during 2010 this will last until about February 2012. During 2011 use an Aeroplan account to credit mileage but bring your 1K card with you when flying to access lounges and other benefits (such as priority check in and boarding).
If your boarding passes in 2011 show UA*G then there is a high risk of mileage being credited to the wrong program. In these cases ask an agent to switch to your Aeroplan number and get the boarding pass reprinted.
