A few months ago many savvy readers with bmi Diamond Club accounts got a scare with the purported closure of the generous frequent flyer program. It turned out to be a false alarm – Diamond Club was closing accounts in a few countries only (see details here).

At a recent investor day, Lufthansa revealed the timetable for Diamond Club closure (see presentation).  Lufthansa says the 2012 accounts will reflect the full effect of Diamond Club closure. This means Diamond Club will be closed by around 30 June 2011.  Other aspects of integration refer to a country by country approach, and this may continue to be used for account closures.

We have other hints from the Lufthansa treatment of Brussels Airline and Swiss programs.  Roughly 6 months notice was given of changes.

Reading that report I’m not so sure that it will be mid-2011 that this happens. The heading says “Restructuring will show full effect in 2011 and 2012, examples…” so it could happen much sooner. There is nothing stopping them from killing the program on January 1, 2011 rather than waiting until mid-year.

I’ve got a large pile of points and I’m going into full burn mode.

Do you think those who re-qualify for BD Gold this year will get Senator status for two years?

  7. The Global Traveller said,

    My guess is:

If you have BD Gold status when Diamond Club is closed, and the closure happens by the end of this year then you may only have Senator status until Feb 2012.

If the closure is next year then you probably will have Senator status until Feb 2013.

  8. The Global Traveller said,

Sure, it might close sooner than mid 2011. I’m not sure whether they will take the opportunity to review the experience from the recent closure of accounts in certain countries (eg Netherlands) in deciding how the main closure will take place – if they do that points to a later timing.

Alignment with Miles and More, which operates on calendar years, would suggest an earlier date. But the Brussels Airlines integration happened in October (2009).
