Overall I enjoy NZ’s product. Certainly better than any North American carrier and QF to my mind. But I have always found a different customer service ethos, which is perplexing at times.

Case in point: a few years ago I booked flights YVR-X/AKL-SYD-AKL-YVR for a visit to family and friends. As Star Alliance Gold I was vigorous in ensuring we booked classes of service and fare bases that earned 100% status miles for the 15k of flights. When we got home we got no points on the AKL-YVR segment.

Also for that flight, we took advantage of buying the empty seat between us, but wanted to be in the middle section rather than the window, as my husband and I both prefer aisle seats. The CSR at AKL struggled with the transaction and put is in the last row of one section of Y class–in a row where seats didn’t fully recline.

I wrote a polite letter of complain to NZ about both issues. On the seating issue they refused to refund the $. They got us each 5k in “courtesy” miles for Aeroplan, but these aren’t status miles. Not great.

It is up to each program whether or not to offer lifetime status benefits, there is no such thing as an alliance lifetime benefit.

After the announcement on the sale of BMI to BA – those with life time Gold from Star Alliance will loose this benefit since BA stated that they do not have ‘life time’ benefit. Does anyone know if/why BA is not part of OneWorld life time benefit.

For different reasons 747′s and Concorde are amazing aircraft, but the A380 (especially on the Emirates version and quality of crew)it is AWESOME.

I flew my first A380 in 2009 from LAX to SYD it was the most amazing thing that happened in 2009. I’ve been to Asia several times and have had to fly 777 or 747.. I’m heading to Seoul in a few months and trying to figure out if there are any flights from SFO or LAX to Seoul on a A380. Love your blog and information

Last year I was fortunate to travel to HKG, vis DBX (from LHR). 1st segment A380 – AWESOME (EVEN IN ECONOMY)2nd segment 777W – so cramped. Fortunately on the return journey Emirates cancelled 777W for a A380 – sheer bliss – Airbus you have an awesome plane – Emirates you have an awesome airline…BA lookout!!!!
