JetBlue apparently launching service to Albuquerque in April 2013

The mayor of Albuquerque announced today that the city will receive non-stop service from JetBlue‘s JFK hub starting in April 2013. Not to much of a surprise to see JetBlue adding new cities but they do generally try to announce the service themselves rather than having someone else break that news. The city expects one daily round trip service, coming in late from NYC and returning as a redeye flight.

And now we wait for the announcement from the carrier…

UPDATE: Apparently they filed fares tonight so this is quite likely for real.

    Oddly enough I am particularly thrilled at this news, as I have wanted to go to the enormous Balloon Festival they have there every year (http://balloonfiesta.com/). This should make it easier to get to!

    As an ABQ-based UA flyer, this makes me happy for three reasons. First, NYC is the biggest market with no nonstop service from ABQ (the obvious legacy carriers fly to DEN, IAH, LAX, SFO, ORD, IAD, DFW, ATL, PHX, while WN hits a few others). Second, EWR is the only major UA hub without a nonstop from ABQ, so maybe UA will match the route. Third, more competition is always better!

    On the other hand, it probably lowers the chances of AS adding service to ABQ, which would make me even happier.

    Any idea the subsidies to fly this route Seth?

    The article suggests that there were incentives involved, including reduced landing fees. I have no idea what the dollar amount involved is.
