SAN has failed miserably at keeping international service. BA used to have a SAN-LGW flight with a one-stop in PHX on a 744. That flight did reasonably well, but they replaced it with a SAN-LHR nonstop on a 777 which didn’t last.
The reality is connections out of SAN are trivial at any number of airports and SAN just doesn’t have the demand to sustain a long-haul.
Oh and the airport authority is a joke. They have yet to accept that they aren’t a tier-1 city or airport. (This coming from someone who lived in SAN for ten years).
