Geek Test: What’s Wrong With This Southwest Ad?

Southwest is releasing a bunch of new advertisements just in time for March Madness, and they posted one online yesterday. It’s hilarious and I love it. But, there is something “wrong” with the video. If you’re a true airplane geek, you should hopefully find the inaccuracy here. :D

Ok Dan, I give up. I’m a 10 year flight attendant and I have over 6 million “true” travel miles. I don’t see it.

Very good advert by SWA! Is it the fact that the competition’s “airplane” is in fact two different types. The shot from the outside is a MD-80 and the inside shot is, I believe, a 737 – wonder if it was shot in an SWA plane.

Last bit looks like its an Air Tran plane :)

My guess is that the aircraft interior shown is not AirTran, or maybe not a 717 at all? I’m just making a wild guess here since I’ve never flown a 717 or Air Tran. :)

Mike nailed it. The interior shot showed a nacelle hanging off of the wing of the MD-80. I don’t believe there is an STC for that!

The last few ad campaigns for SW have been pretty good, I hope they work out.

    Thanks for the post.

Wait for it, it gets better — your SWA 737s are two different 737s. Watch for either A) the winglet, B) the flap canoe colors.

Good catch on the 717 nacelle – I didn’t even see that the first time

Ha! Didn’t know the Boeing 717 had engines on the tail from the outside and the wings on the inside ;) .

I only caught the engine on the wing (of what was a 717), not the disappearing winglet. Nice!

lol, the ads are like the movies – can seem to match the planes correctly!

OMG. You people have way too much time on your hands. Of course, SW fuzzed out the Air Tran name. Of course the lady inside the plane isn’t in a 717. Where would SW get the interior of a 717? A bigger fallacy is the fact that there is no way she could hear the Rampers “razzing” the other passengers in the 717. Someone works for Air Tran here.

I guess swa saves money by not having scheduled maintenance done on their aircraft and being fined by the faa no wonder they dont charge for bags they save it by not doing required maintenance checks.

Interior probably from a Southwest 737 because WHY would other airlines allow access to Southwest film crew?

  13. 13 Dan Webb

The interior of the aircraft is NOT a Southwest interior.

@Jayzee: Southwest actually has one of the best safety records of any US carrier – they save money by only operating one type of aircraft, therefore only training pilots, flight attendants, etc for one plane. They also save money on parts.

As mentioned, the interior is not Southwest. What types of planes have window shades that are pulled up from the bottom? If you notice in the commercial, the shade handle is at the bottom of the window, not the top.

Airbus A319 and A320 have from-the-bottom-up windowshades AND wing-mounted engines.

Also the WN 737 has moved one parking space closer to the other aircraft. You can see it when the rampers are running up and the final shot the 737 has moved or they quickly parked another. WN is pretty fast.

It sure looks like an Airtran 717 at gate 29. But the view from the inside is from the exit row of a 737 (look closely and you’ll see the plug edge and the bottom-up shade is because the release is above the window) Then look at the Southwest plane behind the rampers and you’ll see it at gate 41.

Offhand I can’t think of where Airtran uses a gate 29 where SWA would have access but then again much of that video could have been green screened and the photo of a 717 inserted.

oooooooooohhh! ooh!!! ooh!! I know! Theres an engine on the wing and the engines on the 717′s are in the back by the tail/tail stabilizers :D
