Apologies for the lack of content of late. I’m in the midst of final exams at the moment, and studying has been a bit more intensive than originally thought.
So, I figured for fun that I’d come up with some random airline trivia for fun. I don’t have a prize to offer or anything – so this is just for the sense of accomplishment you’ll get when you find the answers.
- Of what airline should you think when you read the phrase “chatham dockyard”?
- Which airline had “the best care in the air”?
- What airline did Atlantic Coast Airlines become?
- Who are the two engine manufacturers for the A320 family? (The current version, not the neo.)
- Which US airlines fly members of both 737 and the A320 families?

1. British Airways
2. Midwest Airlines nee Midwest Express
3. Independence Air
4. CFM and IAE
5. DL, UA/CO, US
My turn. This will be timed.
1. The name and current disposition of the first 747 in scheduled airline service was?
2. Aloha Airlines operated one widebody aircraft in its 62 year history. What was the type and the destination it served?
3. Prior to its merger with Northwest, Delta Air Lines merged with three other US carriers. Name them.
4. QANTAS’ claim to be the oldest airline in the world (over KLM) is subject to one qualification. What is it?
5. What aircraft type do British Airways, TWA, Eastern, Hawaiian, and Cathay Pacific have in common?
5. I’m guessing it is the L1011. Or the 722?
3. DL’s most recent merger prior to NW was with Western. NW had merged with Republic.
Scott…
1. The first 747 was Clipper Victor/Clipper Young America of PanAm. Unfortunately, it was the ship involved in the Tenerife Disaster.
2. I believe it was a DC-10 they had briefly. Not sure on route(s).
3. Delta has acquired Chicago&Southern, Northeast, and Western in its history.
4. KLM ceased operations during WW2.
5. L-1011
2. It was on the HNL-GUM-TPE route, Under the Aloha Pacific brand.
No idea on 1 and 2, but
3. ACA became Independence air, which went belly up and bought by NW to become Compass
4. IAE V2500 and CFM-56
5. UA, DL, US
I actually have to say to Dan’s question #3, ACA -> Independence Air -> Compass Airlines.
1) what was DL’s last three engine plane?
2) excluding the 747, what was delta’s last 4 engine plane?
3) who took pan am’s 747SPs in PA’s liquidation?
4) which carrier comes up about 20 miles short of circumnavigating the globe based on their current route network?
5) including the carrier in #4 (following the ‘close enough for government work doctrine’), how many carriers circumnavigate the globe based on the current regular schedule?
To clarify on 4 and 5, they are to exclude code share flights operated by others. Looking for carrier metal going all the way around.
To answer Dan’s number 4 there are actually three engine manufacturers for the A320 family: IAE and CFM as previously mentioned, as well as Pratt & Whitney who offer the PW6000 for the A318 as LAN has.
1) 727 was I believe retired some years after the L-10
2) Last DC-8-63 retired in the 1990′s
3) PA didn’t have 747SPs at liquidation. They all went to United with the Pacific sale.
4) Singapore Airlines serves JFK from Europe and EWR from SIN
5) 1, Air New Zealand.
1)British Airways
2)Midwest Express
3)Independence Air
4)CFM International and Pratt and Whitney
5)Delta,US Airways,United/Contientantal Airlines
