Gravelly Point: Plane Dork Heaven

Ever since I found out I would be spending the summer in DC, Gravelly Point was in my plans. Why? Because the park offers awesome spotting. Below you’ll find some of the better shots, you can see the entire album here.

Highlights for me included a new Frontier A320, an old colors US Airways Express (Piedmont) Dash-8, and the American Airlines 737-800 in the Astrojet livery.

A Great Livery From Kulula

South African low cost carrier Kulula just unveiled a really clever special livery called “Flying 101″ on a 737-800, labeling parts of the aircraft with a bit of snark, calling the exit rows “the throne zone” and referring to the registration as a “secret agent code.” Take a look! AirTran’s Latest Football Livery

AirTran has already released some special liveries for the Atlanta Falcons and the Baltimore Ravens, and now a third, for the Indianapolis Colts, has been spotted. Kudos to Chris Weyer for snapping these pictures at Hartsfield:

Looks good! Though the Falcons one is still my favorite.

U2′s Tour Plane

U2 has been on tour, and the band has been using a specially-paint Air Canada Jetz A320. Spotter Roman Dolinsky, or N75715 on NYCAviation, was able to get a closer look at Newark.

The Delta A330

Delta has repainted a Northwest A330-300 (N801NW) in its new livery. Many thanks to Nick Vollaro for allowing me to use his photo.

Josh May also has some good shots (photo one, photo two), but unfortunately he did not give me permission to post his photos here.

I can’t say I really like the way the aircraft looks. Like all of the new Delta birds, I think there’s way too much white than there should be, and I also think the titles on the A330 are to small. I wonder how this livery will look on the shorter A330-200.

What are your thoughts on this new paintjob?

When Liveries Collide!

Sometimes, when an aircraft leaves its old airline, some of the livery stays, making an interesting hybrid. Here’s one example that I like, of this former Northwest 747-200, previously registered as N636US (now 5N-MAD). The aircraft is being operates by Biman Bangladesh, on lease from Kabo Air.

KLM Goes Retro

2009 is an important year in aviation history as KLM, the oldest airline still operating, turns 90 years old. Just like sister airline Air France painted a bird in retro colors for its 75th anniversary, KLM has done the same. I have three photos of the 737-800. In the past I haven’t been too successful getting photographer’s permissions to use their photos in blog posts, but this time I was lucky! Thanks guys! Click on the photos to see a larger version.

I like the way this 737 looks, especially the tail colors. I wish more airlines would do this. I would love to see a Delta aircraft in the widget scheme or perhaps a United aircraft in the same scheme as the Caravelle.
