Does US airways award really have the worst availability?

No, it doesn’t.In fact, US airways have one of the best program and redemption level among all US or even most international airlines

WSJ posted an article yesterday about testing award succuss rate for 22 selected airlines. US air and Delta got the worst result with only 11%and 13% respectively. However, I and many Frequent Flyer gurus know that the testing did not include the redemption on partner airlines, where you can use US airways miles on.

US airways is part of staralliance, so you can redeem US air miles for all *A carriers and it doesn’t practice award seat blocking like UA, that means whenver  u find a partner seat on ANA search tool, you can get it. Also, US airways have the most flexiable routing restrictions, you can route via Europe for award to Asia or via Asia for award to South Pacific. It’s kind of unfair for US air to be on the bottom of the list.

Who is the worst then? Delta!! I am fully supporting the result we got from the research. Finding a seat on Delta flights with lowest award level is something close to mission impossible. For flight to Asia, it’s getting even worse. Not only they block every single seat on their own flight, but also block every possible redemption seat offered by partner airlines such as KE and MU. They don’t offer award table for travel originate from other region and basiclly charges u whatever they want for a redemption seat.

Delta can do this because they are the largest airline on earth now and have hubs cover every region in USA and is the only Skyteam carrier in North America. For people living in/around hub cities, they don’t have choice, but to fly DL.

I just hope after UA/CO merger, they don’t do the same thing as DL do.

Not sure where you get the idea that:

Not only they block every single seat on their own flight, but also block every possible redemption seat offered by partner airlines such as KE and MU.

@chris, If you have tried to book a premium award seat using Dl miles on KE or MU since last month, you will realize, KE shows flight, DL says zero. 1.5 months ago, DL showed what KE offered.

Also, KE and MU only have blackout date to certain region for certain time of the year, but DL applies that blackout to all KE/MU flights.
