Stupid AA award rule!
AA award from Asia2 to South Pacific is 35K each way in business class, but their rule doesn’t allow routing via Asia 1. The rule was made long time ago when all Asia 2 countries are south east Asia countries to prevent backtracking to Asia 1 connecting to South Pacific.
Now the country zone have changed, China moved from Asia 1 to Asia 2, so going to South Pacific via Asia 1(Japan) is not a backtracking anymore, but AA did not change the routing rule, so routeing via Japan is considered 2 awards
Then I tried PVG-HKG-AKL-PPT, no, you can not do that either, because there is no published fare via AKL from PVG-PPT, award breaks in AKL.
Basically, want to use AA miles to PPT from Asia2? , pay 2 awards.

AA has some of the strangest rules with regard to award tickets. The above is not surprising.
