Several people I know ordered one of the "give one, get one" OLPC’s during the Christmas season. And none of them have actually received it yet, despite handing over $400 almost 2 months ago.

And now PC World editor Harry McCracken has posted his experiences in dealing with the ordering process. It turns out that Paypal may have left out the address from many of these orders, and the good folks at OLPC seem to have ignored that little issue.

I’m not entirely sure how it’s possible to have 100′s of orders waiting without an address (but WITH an email address) and not have anyone with the brains to drop those people an email asking for their shipping address. I’ve done logisitcs before, and it people were sending me money without a shipping address I’d be working overtime to find out where to send their products.

It’s also mighty convenient to place all the blame with Paypal, if OLPC had their act together then they would have made sure that all orders were processed on their own systems, and that Paypal was only used for the payment portion of the order.

No offence to the OLPC organization, but if you can’t even handle the logistics of shipping a laptop within the US, how on earth do you plan to get them shipped to third world countries where they don’t have access to USPS or FedEx?
