If you are planning to take Friday off so you can stand in line and buy a 3G iPhone, stop for a moment and check the AT&T 3G coverage in your city (and the cities you travel to). You’ll be surprised how many US cities still lack 3G data.
The blue spots on the map above, show where you’ll find 3G. Everything else is still slow EDGE data.
I’m convinced a lot of people will be taking their new phone home, and come to the nasty conclusion that it’s just as slow as their previous/current iPhone.
AT&T Coverage check (make sure you enable the show 3G coverage checkbox).

I’m officially confused. Back here (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=808234&page=13) when the dude from the NY Times questioned the coverage, the verdict was it’s decent, in spite of what NYT said. But now a lot of people are going to be questioning the decision when they get home.
Help! Should we go out and get one or not?

Well, I still consider it decent. Especially since they have only been building the network for a few years. But it is by no means “nationwide”.
A lot of people equate an AT&T signal with being able to do 3G, bars are bars in their minds.
I’d say 90% of iPhone customers won’t have a problem, but entire states WILL. If you live in the Midwest (Iowa etc…), then you are out of luck.
It’s a 10 second check on the coverage site to be sure you will have 3G. Otherwise it’s just another investment that might turn out to be disappointing.
