DOTD: Navigon Freshmaps 3 yr subscription for $14.99!

I’m not sure whether this is a pricing error, or just a really good deal, but Mac Mall has the Navigon Freshmaps subscription card (3 years) for just $14.99.

With this card, you’ll get 3 years of map updates for your Navigon GPS unit (it will NOT update other brands). Since many vendors charge upwards of $100 for EACH map update, you’ll realize that this is a hot deal.

You can find the Navigon Freshmaps update card here.

Sprint really gets it – trains employees to help you with your phone

Posted on: September 10th, 2008 by: scottc

I’ve never made a secret of it; I’m a big Sprint fan. After some initial skepticism they really impressed me when I signed up last year, and they haven’t let me down yet.

Of course, I’m lucky because I purchased a phone that I understand, but there are too many people out there that don’t have a clue how to use their device.

Last week, I ran into a friend who used the browser on his Blackberry to check his email, and was not aware that the Blackberry was actually built for messaging. I showed him in about 2 minutes how to setup push email on his device, much to his joy. So it is needless to say that this new announcement from Sprint seems to make so much sense:

Sprint closed all of its 1,219 stores on Sunday Aug. 17 to train its employees for the "Ready Now" program. The goal is that customers should leave stores with their phones "completely set up and personalized," said Kim Dixon, Sprint’s senior vice president of stores.

Customers "have got these really great devices … but they just don’t know how to set it all up," Dixon said.

Employees will now set up e-mail access, move over contacts from an old phone, connect Bluetooth headsets and explain other functions.

Customers who don’t have time for the 10-minute to half-hour sessions can make appointments for later visits. These free sessions will be available to existing subscribers as well, even if they aren’t buying a new phone or accessory, Dixon said.

Microsoft announces the “Arc mouse” – a portable wireless laser mouse

Posted on: September 10th, 2008 by: scottc

Microsoft sure picked a bad day to announce their new lineup of peripherals. Right in the middle of the Apple madness, they took the wraps off a new desktop keyboard/mouse desktop combo, a new “blue laser” mouse and their newest  notebook mouse. The Microsoft Arc Mouse is a folding mouse which will launch within a few weeks for $59.99.

The Arc mouse houses a “micro-transceiver” which snaps into the bottom of the unit, and it uses a regular laser sensor (not the new Blue Laser).

I’m pretty impressed with the design, but I would have preferred a Bluetooth version as I really hate having to plug a receiver into my laptop. For the time being, I’ll stick with my MoGo mouse.

You can pre-order the Arc mouse on Amazon.com.

Is the HP Elitebook the first REAL “all-day” laptop?

Posted on: September 10th, 2008 by: scottc

HP just announced the newest entry in their Elitebook lineup; the new 6930p can be configured with several power saving features, which should make the machine capable of lasting 24 hours between charges.

By implementing an SSD drive, a special LED display and an ultra capacity battery, the boffins at HP may have finally delivered on the promise of all day computing. Of course, until the machine has been reviewed in a real life test, we’ll just have to take their word for it.

The Elitebook 6930p should be out by October, but no price has been revealed yet.

My take on the whole “new iPod nano” leak?

Posted on: September 8th, 2008 by: scottc

image Several weeks ago some CAD drawings of “the new iPod Nano” popped up. Since then there have been even more leaks, and some photos of cases for this “new iPod”.

I’m not usually one to jump on the rumor bandwagon, but in this case I’m going to make an exception: I’m convinced all these images are part of a big hoax.

That’s right; I think someone is having a huge laugh posting these fake images, issuing false press releases and sitting behind his desk taking notes of every site that took his bait.

In the past, Apple has managed to keep its new designs pretty closely guarded, and while they may have been a little sloppy in the past, I’m just not convinced that any of the stuff leaked this time is real.

Either way, I guess I’ve just added more insanity to the Apple iPod rumor machine.

Got Skype? Cancel your Skype > Paypal account link!

Valleywag has a story about a case of identity theft involving Skype and Paypal (who are both owned by Ebay).

The victim woke up one morning and found EUR100 in Skype purchases in his Paypal account. His Skype password was also changed.

None of this would be a big deal if the companies involved cared about what happened. Unfortunately Skype and Paypal keep pointing the finger at each other, and neither of them seem interested in resolving the matter.

Based on this story, I’ve removed the Paypal authorization on my Skype account as I don’t want to become the next victim of these 2 companies unwillingness to respond to theft, I strongly suggest you do the same!

Apple event on Tuesday September 9th – new iPods?

Posted on: September 5th, 2008 by: scottc

image

Apple is holding another super secret product announcement event on Tuesday, and the general consensus is that they’ll be announcing some new iPod models (they usually do this, just in time for the Christmas shopping season).

In a discussion on Flyertalk, I said that I expect them to announce a new iPod nano, which will be a cross between a regular iPod, and an iPod Touch. It’ll be the thinnest iPod ever, and Apple will claim it is the thinnest mp3 player in the world. Of course, history has shown that only 0.00001% of the rumors and leaks actually turn out to be true when it comes to Apple, so we’ll have to wait till Tuesday to see what is actually coming.

Free international conference calls from “free conference calls”

Posted on: September 5th, 2008 by: scottc

image

Apologies for the silly title, but there isn’t much you can say about free conference calls. This service has been around for some time now, and offers 100% free conference calls. Recently, they added some international access numbers, making it free and easy to hold a conference call between other countries. They offer access numbers in 10 European countries, and each call can accommodate up to 96 people. The service has no ad’s and no fee’s. At the end of the call, you can even request a recording of the conference.

I have not tested this service myself, so if you any experience with them, drop me a comment!
