I’m not sure whether this is a pricing error, or just a really good deal, but Mac Mall has the Navigon Freshmaps subscription card (3 years) for just $14.99.

With this card, you’ll get 3 years of map updates for your Navigon GPS unit (it will NOT update other brands). Since many vendors charge upwards of $100 for EACH map update, you’ll realize that this is a hot deal.

You can find the Navigon Freshmaps update card here.

4040gps

My deal of the day is the Magellan 4040 GPS unit. This text to speech enabled GPS system has built in Bluetooth (for making hands free calls), as well as a fairly decent database with 1.5 million points of interest (this unit can be “hacked” to add an additional 5.5 million points of interest).

The unit is refurbished, which means it was returned to Magellan who then clean it up, replace anything necessary and repackage it. Unfortunately Amazon do not mention what kind of warranty is included.

If you need a cheap GPS unit with text-to-speech, then the Navigon 2100 is probably the cheapest option I’ve seen in a long time. It is a refurbished unit and only comes with a 90 day warranty.

Traffic alerts are not included, but you can add them for as little as $70 with a Navigon subscription (available from places like Amazon).

Zoombak is a fantastic little GPS tracking device that can keep an eye on you, your car, your pet, your children, or anything else you want to be sure doesn’t get too far away.

It isn’t the only device out there that is capable of this, but it certainly seems to have one of the best feature sets I’ve ever seen.

I’ve got one here and will be posting a full review soon. But I can already reveal that it’s a marvel of technology, not to mention tons of fun!

If you don’t want to wait for my review, you can pick one up today from Bestbuy.com or directly from Zoobak.com. A special version for your dog can be found at the local Petsmart.

First of all, I’ll have to apologize for not actually testing this application. But the description sounds so interesting that I figured I’ll share it now and test it later.

Trippr is about as simple as it gets; it takes your GPS location, sends that to Flickr, and displays photos with "geotagged" coordinates of the area you are in.

Essentially, it shows photos of interesting things around you. The photos could be something cool, but they could also just be of the local sewage treatment plant, so don’t hold me responsible for a wasted afternoon.

The (free) application is part of a challenge to develop 30 different programs in 30 days and can be found here.

Dash just released the first major update for their Express GPS unit. What may seem like a minor event, is actually quite impressive because it is the first over-the-air update on any GPS unit.

Usually an update requires you to download an update package, remove the unit from your car and plug it into your PC. But Dash Express users will get the update "pushed" to their unit as soon as they are in range of a suitable Wi-Fi connection.

In addition to some performance enhancements, the update adds several new features:

MyRouteMaps and traditional GPS devices are great navigation tools, but they will never replace local street smarts. Drivers often know the best shortcuts to and from the places that they frequent, but what they really want to know is whether their route is the smartest route today based on current traffic data. Dash is the only GPS that learns routes automatically based on user behavior. With Dash’s new MyRoute feature, as drivers travel from one point to another, the device automatically learns their preferred route. The next time that they drive between the same origin and destination, the first route choice will be a MyRoute, complete with traffic-based arrival time data. Drivers can compare their MyRoute to the computed Dash routes, including traffic detours, and decide which one is optimal.

· Search Along Route – Finding whatever drivers need on the road using Yahoo! Local search just got even easier. With the new Search Along Route feature, Dash drivers can now search for virtually anything they need along their selected route, shortening diversions on the way to their destination. Want to grab a latte on the way to a meeting? Simply do a Yahoo! Local search for “Starbucks” and select “along route” to be presented with the stores that are most conveniently located. Results are displayed with the distance from the current location, the distance from the route and the direction of the destination relative to the selected route.

· FasterFind – With FasterFind powered by SiRFInstantFix technology, Dash Express uses additional over-the-air GPS satellite position information to get a fast GPS fix so Dash drivers can be underway in seconds. Since the Dash Express is connected, the FasterFind file is automatically and wirelessly downloaded at regular intervals providing users with the most accurate GPS satellite position information available. There is no need to connect to a PC or wait to get a GPS fix. FasterFind not only helps drivers get a quick start every time the device is turned on, it also enables a fast GPS fix under difficult conditions such as beneath tree cover and near high-rise buildings.

The Dash Express is available for the new low price of just $299. A subscription to their service starts at $9.99 a month (on a 2 year prepaid plan) or $12.99 on their month-to-month plan. Each unit comes with 3 months free service.

When you surround yourself with sun, sand and surf, it is pretty easy to forget minor things like putting your GPS unit out of sight (or removing it from your car). But every year 1000’s of GPS units will be stolen.

So, as a public service to all my readers, I’m going to give you 3 simple tips that will make things a little harder for thieves, and may even skip your car.

1) Always remove your GPS unit from your vehicle. It sounds like such a logical thing to do, but we have all left it in plain sight before (I know I have). Don’t just take the unit itself out, but also remove the windshield mount and charging cord (otherwise it’s just an open invitation to check out the rest of the car).

image

2) Enable the security function on your GPS unit.

Of the "big manufacturers", only Gamin and TomTom seem to understand the threat of your device being stolen, so they have added a PIN protection option. Garmin even include warning stickers for your car, alerting wannabe thieves to their security features.

On a TomTom unit, go to your preferences screen, select "set owner", then "options" and set a 4 digit pin.

3) Remove as much personal information as possible. I’ve always suggested removing your home address from your GPS unit.

If someone steals your bag (containing your home keys and GPS unit), then it’s pretty easy for them to head over there and help themselves to some more goodies.

Of course, it is always handy to have your home address programmed in the unit, so feel free to do so, but call it "police station" or "grocery store" to fool the thief.

Set the "home" address to your office or a mailbox service (if you have one) so the device can be returned if an honest person finds it. But an even better option is to attach a Stuffbak locator sticker to it.

It’s summer, so it’s the season for non-news and silly gadgets. And the Mio Knight Rider GPS unit fits perfectly in both of those categories.

While other GPS makers put millions into researching the latest and greatest features, MIO simply added some nifty red lights and a K.I.T.T. voice to their GPS unit.

And I think it is brilliant.

I’ve had a Knight Rider voice on my TomTom before, and it is pretty cool (for about 20 minutes), but this thing takes thing much further.

Be sure to check out the video of K.I.T.T. in action.
