If you were to ask me right now, what the number 1 application is I’d like for the iPhone, I’d tell you "Slingplayer".

Thankfully that wait might soon be over, as Sling have been showing off a "proof of concept" client for the iPhone.

It’s proof of concept, because Apple still haven’t allowed Sling into the official iPhone developers program, so for the time being it requires an iPhone that has been "jailbroken". There are some videos of the client in action, and I have to admit that it runs pretty smooth. Sling even added some nifty touch scrolling controls for the remote control portion. Dave Zatz has more information on the player here.

If you use a Slingbox on the road (on a WindowsMobile or Symbian device), then head on over to the Slingmedia web site and update your player.

Enhancements have been made for several phones, including the Sprint Mogul.

If you haven’t tried the player, then you can take advantage of their 30 day trial offer.

After my initial review of the HAVA Platinum HD I promised I’d put it up against the Slingmedia Slingbox SOLO. I picked the SOLO because it matches the specifications of the HAVA Platinum HD. Both have HD inputs, and both are in the same price range.

For the test I connected both devices to the same HD video source (a Tivo Series 3), I used the included cables for both devices and connected them to the same Ethernet switch (a Netgear gigabit switch). I made sure that the software on my desktop PC (a Quad core Dell XPS) was the most recent version (non-beta), and updated both units to the newest available firmware. Both devices are connected to the same component output so they are being fed the exact same video signal.

Deal of the day for today is the Slingmedia Slingbox SOLO. This Slingbox has HD inputs (but remember, it won’t actually stream in HD) as well as regular composite inputs. It’s the newest generation Slingbox, and will stream up to 640×480.

If you use Google Checkout (as a new user) then you’ll be eligible for another $10 off, bringing the Slingbox down to just $124.99 with free shipping!

  • Confirmed : I love the Slingbox
  • Confirmed: The Slingbox can stream your TV signal over the Internet
  • Plausible: The Slingbox can help alleviate boredom when stuck in a hotel room or airport lounge
  • Busted: The Slingbox Pro and Solo device can stream HD over the Internet

OK. I’ll admit that this little show was all done just to try and explain the final myth I posted above.

The deal of the day today is the Sling Media Slingbox Classic. This unit is not the latest generation, but it still a great purchase. If you need a refresher on what a Slingbox can do for you; read my article. The Slingbox classic combines AV outputs (like on a Tivo, cable box or satellite box) with an integrated tuner. This essentially means it will connect to almost any setup, so it’s a safe purchase!

The deal is offered by Woot; so if you think you might want one, don’t delay as these deals run out as soon as Woot is out of stock.

The Deal Of The Day for this sunny Monday is the Sling Media Slingbox AV. This second generation Slingbox has AV connectors (and no tuner) so it’s perfect for anyone with a cable box, satellite box or TiVo.

If you need a quick refresher on what a Slingbox does, then read my article on "what can Sling do for you".

The Amazon price for the Slingbox today is just $106.95, which is quite a bit cheaper than most vendors (Buy.com $115).
