IAD update: Air India out; Aerosur and Turkish Airlines in
by: unroadwarrior
Washington, DC’s Dulles airport (IAD) is on the grow. It has recently added an intra-terminal train, a new runway and hopefully, will soon add a new terminal to replace the ugly C and D terminals. IAD has also had some airline additions and one loss. As I reported earlier, Air India had started serving IAD but soon dropped it with no reason given. The Air India signs were recently removed from the airport signs, dashing any hopes I had of them returning.
Two recent additions to IAD have been Bolivia’s Aerosur and Turkey’s Turkish Airlines.
I am really excited about Turkish Airlines, as they are a Star Alliance member. This raises the number of Star Alliance airlines serving IAD to eight:
- United
- Continental (till they are fully gobbled up by United)
- US Airways
- Lufthansa
- Austrian Airlines
- SAS
- ANA and now
- Turkish Airlines
Turkish operates its IAD-IST (Istanbul) flight four times a week.
Aerosur is not a part of any airline alliance. At the moment, it is operating one flight a week between Santa Cruz (VVI) and IAD. This flight has a stop over in Miami (MIA).
Another South American airline that already flies to IAD is Avianca. It is expected to join Star Alliance. That will take IAD’s Star count up to nine! Anyone else foresee a Star Alliance lounge at IAD?
