Avios: Points? Miles? Doubloons? Dinars?
I posted an article last week about the new that is giving 100,000 Avios points. I interchangeably referred to Avios as points and miles in my post. I got a clarification email from The Mileage Company, which manages British Airways’ frequent flyer program, letting me know that Avios is not miles, but a common currency for all IAG airlines. I have corrected the post and it now refers to Avios as points. I would like to thank the Mileage company for reechoing out. They also sent me an FAQ about Avios, that I am posting here for everyones reference.
What is Avios?
Avios is the new shared reward currency for British Airways Executive Club.
Why did you create one shared currency?
British Airways and Iberia have merged to form the International Airlines Group (IAG). The Mileage Company, operators of the UK Avios travel rewards program and the Avios shared currency, is part of IAG. Having a shared global currency means giving customers more choice, flexibility and better value across all IAG loyalty programs. As IAG grows, Avios will grow with it. The intention is for Avios to be the currency collected by members of all IAG airline brands’ loyalty programs.
What are the benefits of Avios to the customers?
Customers will see a wide variety of benefits including:
• Cabin upgrades using Avios
• A new range of travel reward redemption options, including hotels and car hire for BA Executive Club members
• More flexibility as customers can now use Avios for one-way flights or to mix and match the airports they fly to and from.
Is one Avios point the same value as a former BA Mile?
Yes, one Avios is exactly one BA mile.
The statement – “As IAG grows, Avios will grow with it. The intention is for Avios to be the currency collected by members of all IAG airline brands’ loyalty programs”, leads me to believe that BMI’s Diamond club will soon be adopting the Avios currency, even if they remain independent of British Airways, as an airline.
No matter what you may call them (Iraqi Dinar’s anyone), the new is till a prime offer to get with it’s 100,000 Avios points.
