Merger blues? US Airways Credit Card offer nor for upto 40,000 miles

*** OFFER IS NOW UPTO 40,000 MILES. WAS ORIGINALLY 50,000 ***

Every time there is a merger between airlines, I have personally leveraged the opportunity to make sure I get miles in both airlines’ accounts. When the merger does happen, the miles get combined, raising their value. 40,000 miles each in two separate airlines accounts is much less than 80,000 in one airlines. I did this way back with the NorthWest-Delta merger, then with the Continental-United merger and am going to do for the potential US Airways-American Airlines merger.

a plane parked on the tarmacI already have an American Airlines card, so there is a balance. I have some US Airways miles from older trips. Even combined it is not a large total. But US Airways just increased the mileage offer on their credit card to unto 40,000 miles. Add that to the mix and the combined total across both airlines is significant!

Here is the offer. It gives 30,000 miles after the 1st purchase and another 10,000 after a transfer. Details:

  • Earn up to 40,000 bonus miles on qualifying transactions
  • Exclusive: Redeem for flights for 5,000 fewer miles
  • Enjoy 2 miles per $1 on US Airways purchases
  • Earn 1 mile per $1 spent everywhere else
  • Two roundtrip companion tickets each year
  • Zone 2 priority boarding on every flight
  • First class check-in
  • Please see terms and conditions for complete details

  1. How is this a better offer?

The annual fee is not waived.

And you have to transfer $10k to get the 10k miles, so you’ll pay $200 – 300 in balance transfer fees.

  2. @frequentchurner the previous offer was only 40,000 miles, including the transfer. Please let me know if there is an even better deal. I will share that link too

  3. I’m not saying there’s a better offer in terms of absolute number of miles, but this offer is effectively 40k miles, since it’s not worth spending a few hundred dollars on 10k more miles.

The original offer was 40k after first purchase, and annual fee waived. Much better.

Here is the old offer. It has been listed on flyetalk for more than a year and it is available to everyone even though it says only available to Chairmans Preferred Status.

Annual fee waived, everyone gets 40,000, and 10,000 on anniversary; whereas the new offer doesn’t waive the fee and if you don’t get approved for the world mastercard version, they will give you a platinum version that only includes a 15,000 bonus.

  5. The Chairmans offer is way better than this. No annual fee the first year, 10,000 bonus miles per year, 10,000 EQM and waived award processing fees with $25,000 spend — and yes, the same 40,000 for for first purchase and 10,000 for a $10,000 balance transfer, but the BT deal sucks so I wouldn’t advise bloggers to pimp this part of the offer.

  6. What, no waived baggage fee’s with any of these Useless Air offers? How dare they not offer 1st bag free like American and United. Another reason to Hate US Air (the CEO is a chump too)

  7. Of course you’re assuming the card will still be around in a year to collect those bonuses, which is sketchy at best. I know after the CO-UA merger, Chase converted my CO card to a UA card and then cancelled it all together when they realized I had two accounts for the same card(I had a UA card also).

  8. Your link is actually directing to a 30k after first purchase, 10k after a balance transfer. However, in the write-up, you say that you can get 40k after first purchase, 10k after the balance transfer.

You may want to check your affiliate link, because its definitely not redirecting to the one that you want it to.

Plus, there is an offer out there for 40k after first purchase and also a 10k anniversary bonus. You may want to highlight that.
