Flight Innovations

Very interesting article on the Economist on possible innovations in the airline industry. I would personally like to see the pre-boarding using ‘people containers’. Here are a few selections from the article:

Coating common surfaces with silver to prevent the spread of colds and flu
People are pre-loaded into detached air-conditioned cabins that would then be rolled onto the plane (+1)
Localized temperature controls (+1)
Radio-frequency-ID-enabled travel documents
Seat allocation could also be based on the amount of hand luggage a passenger is carrying (+1)

What innovations would you like to see in airplanes, airports and …

Holiday season gifts for travelers

Holiday Season is here (already!?) It’s time again to start hunting for gifts for loved ones. I love shopping for travelers (the road warriors and the UN-roadwarriors) in my life. Being one myself, I know how to scratch their itch. Here are my favs for making my travels more comfortable and productive. Gift them to yourself or your loved ones.

The iPad – Whatever new tablet may come out, the iPad is the downright winner. I never leave home without it. I use it as my in-flight or waiting-at-the-gate IFE and …

This aircraft came from… the domestic addition

After the great response and feedback I got from my last post on This Aircraft came from where?, where I traced the path of a United 767 flying inter nation routes, I decided to do the same for a domestic aircraft. I chose a 757, my favorite single-aisle plane (lots of upgrade room). and traced it back. Apparently one can go deeper than 10 segments. I was able to go 17 for the domestic routes. I guess it is tie based and not segment based. Here it goes:
Some stats:

Total Segments: …

Last Minute Gifts for Travelers

Travelers are tough people to buy gifts for. They have been there, done that, seen it all and have the t-shirts to go with it too. As the gift giving seams enters its final lap, I though I would share some of my favorite gifts to give to travelers. Remember, Amazon (and most other websites) still guarantee Christmas delivery without expedited delivery fee, if ordered by Monday, Dec. 19th. So here goes:

The new Kindle Fire and its little older brother the Kindle (starting at only $79 now!) are all time favorites. I …

Hurricanes and Airline Travel

As expected, hurricanes disrupt air travel (Duh! as my son would say). With Irene approaching this weekend, I wanted to send this out all my readers who may be traveling over the next few days. Just a few tips to consider:
1. If you can change your travel plans, do it right now. The more you delay, the higher the number of people who have taken the initiative, have already done so. This reduces the number of available seats in the alternate flights you may be planning to take after the …

Chicago!

No, this is not a post about the Broadway musical (or it’s hollywood adaptation) or the music group named Chicago. Just some cool pictures I took of Chicago’s skyline, as we approached O’Hare airport on my last trip to Chicago. Enjoy… and do leave a comment about what you think.

Also check out pictures I took from my window seat from LAX to IAD.

Pictures from the Window seat: LAX-IAD

I love taking pictures from the window seat (I always ask for and get a window seat). I recently flew from Los Angeles (LAX) to Washington Dulles (IAD). Here are some awesome pictures I took. The flight was on a United 757.
I was even more excited about taking these pictures as I had just bought my new Sony NEX3 DSLR. It sure beat the pictures I was taking so far with my BlackBerry 9700!

Here you go. Enjoy, share and …

Dear TSA, Pat me, scan me, swab me; just get me there safe

These was been a tremendous level of whining and hysteria in the media about are new TSA security checks. Travelers and some media personnel seem to be having heartburn with two things the TSA has recently introduced to improve security for us, the travelers – namely:

Full body scanners
Enhanced pat downs

There is one and only one reason for these measures – our safety. I don’t know about you but I fly a lot and want to be safe on my flights. Unfortunately the terrorists have other intentions. As the undie-bomber proved, …

Can an airline just deduct more miles for an award?

I had an interesting encounter with Delta SkyMiles customer service as a result of my last award trip on Delta. I went over the booking & redemption process in my last post – Booking complex awards. As I mentioned I redeemed 50,000 miles for that award. I had major problems on the return trip. The Air Jamaica flight from Kingston (KIN) to Ft. Lauderdale (FLL) was delayed by 3 hours! This messed up my connections: FLL-ATL-IAD. I called Delta and explained my situation to them. The agent on the phone …
