  1. Starwood has every *right* to make a political statement. Whether or not it is wise from a business perspective, however, is a different issue. Their wording includes statements such as:

“…small steps can make a big difference.”
“It’s a small commitment to the environment we all can keep.”
“Together, we can make a bold statement against climate change.”

While it is certainly trendy to greenwash, and perhaps the majority of their customers agree with/buy into this thinking, there are a very substantial part of their customer base that sees anti-energy-use tactics, especially when based upon “climate change” (formerly “global warming”) reasoning, as damaging – not helpful – to both the environment, business, the economy, and therefore to people.

Again, I don’t dispute their *right* to do this, but perhaps they should have toned down the certainty of the wording to take the political radicalism out of the offer, making it more broadly palatable. Heck, what about making an offer that isn’t so politically aligned, such as an offer to give 100 points to anyone who pledges to donate to breast cancer or heart disease research?

  2. @Mooper they aren’t doing it because it is political, they are doing it as marketing — to ‘align’ themselves with a cause, they become a brand which people who care about that cause want to be associated with.
