A card that I’ve been curious about for a long time — American’s Business ExtrAA American Express — is a bit of a conundrum. Nobody really has written much about it.

But the Business ExtrAA (small business program with AAdvantage) program has some great awards, and their chart is fairly lucrative (3000 points is enough to gift an Admiral’s Club membership, 5400 points is enough for a capacity controlled premium cabin Hawaii roundtrip award) — so it always just seemed a matter of figuring out the earning rates. Which are far from clear on the card’s website.

But Pizza in Motion has begun digging and lays out a bit of how the card works along with its benefits as well as who qualifies and the process for getting the card. He promises more to come, as well.

It’s amazing to me how little even American Express seems so know about the product.

If the 5% cash back is what interests you, check out the US Bank Cash+ card, it is 5% cash back at 2 categories of your choosing, and the list is large and doesn’t rotate. I do Hotels and Airlines, as long as you book direct with them I have had no issue getting it. And its really 6.25% cash back, because for every $100 you redeem you get a $25 Visa prepaid card (I pay my cable bill with it).
Could you do better with airline or hotel branded card? Maybe, but just barely, and not universally across all hotels and airlines. Plus I barely can keep up with redeeming the points I have, so I’d rather take 6.25% cash back.

One caveat is there isn’t a guarantee that they don’t remove Airlines & Hotels from the list, you have to select your categorizes every quarter, but they have been there since the card launched in June.

I guess another caveat, as I look at my link, it seems to be apply in branch only… I did apply online a few months ago so there may be online links floating around, or maybe they will bring it back for online applications at some point.

4 million in revenue? Nuff said.
