At the end of December I reviewed the American Express Premier Rewards Gold card and then in January included it as part of my credit card strategy for 2013.

When I got the card I received 25,000 points as a signup bonus for the card. The strongest arguments for the card are that it earns triple points on airfare, double points on gas and groceries (it’s the best Membership Rewards-earning card), and that the points are extremely flexible — Membership Rewards points transfer into a whole host of points partner programs, and in many cases do so instantly.

My standard link (that I won’t offer here, lest some folks click it by mistake) offers 25,000 points and with a fee of $0 the first year the card is worth getting even then for the signup bonus alone, plus the ability to earn category bonuses. Putting $30,000 spend on the card earns 15,000 bonus points, and I do that much in airfare (for myself and others).

CreditCards.com seems to have a slew of exclusive offers now and again with American Express, that don’t exist elsewhere. At the beginning of January they had an American Express Platinum 100,000 point signup bonus, for instance.

And currently they have a 50,000 point offer for the Premier Rewards Gold card after $1000 spend within 3 months, which is twice as good as the ‘standard’ bonus.

  • Go to CARDMATCHTM.
  • Fill in your name and address. The social security number field is not required, and offers came up fine for me without completing it.

It searched offers and found the 50,000 point American Express Premier Rewards Gold as the very top one for me (even though I already have the card, so their system isn’t checking for that…)

I love American Express points best for transfers to Singapore Airlines Krisflyer – since Singapore makes two first class award seats available almost all the time for their own members.

Others like British Airways Avios — I’m certainly far less of a fan since the November 2011 program changes — for short-haul non-stop flights where roundtrips start at 9000 miles and 50,000 points are enough for many US-London and US-South America routes, and South American and US domestic won’t involve fuel surcharges (and neither will US-Europe on British Airways’ oneworld partner Air Berlin).

50,000 points is also enough for an Air France KLM Flying Blue business class roundtrip ‘promo award’ between certain rotating US cities and Europe (albeit with fuel surcharges).

And of course American Express also offers semi-regular transfer promotions where 50,000 points may wind up transferring into 65,000 or even 75,000 miles at times.

It seems well worth jumping on this offer that’s twice as good as usual, especially given the relatively modest bonuses that other American Express cards have had lately.

(Since I don’t have my own 50,000 point offer link for the American Express Premier Rewards Gold card, I direct you to CreditCards.com’s CARDMATCHTM. They have a financial relationship with American Express. I have a referral link to Cardmatch though I do not know what comes of that.)

    I am aware, via your posts, that sometimes there are bonus xfer opportunities, but what would be the best option to maximize MRs value ? Avios, i am guessing, if the bonus op returns, but what are other options ?

    Thanks.

  2. Shon said,

    can you combine MR points from Business and personal cards

  3. Levi Flight said,

    I believe the best offer out this week is 75k points. I took advantage of that. Wish i website i could make points from referrals.

  4. Miles said,

    You were offered the Premier Rewards Gold card even though you already have one, but will you get the 50K Membership Rewards® points?

  5. Gil said,

    Gary, I just applied and was instantly approved. Thanks!

  6. Louis said,

    I thought you could transfer MR to Starwood. Rarely mentioned anywhere, but I consider that an outstanding way to redeem.

  7. Gary said,

    @Levi Flight – the 75k offer was for a different (Business) card
    @Miles – you won’t get the points for the card if you already have the card

  8. Gary said,

    @Louis – the usual rate to do so is 3 Amex points into 1 Starpoint so it’s not a great value

  9. Gary said,

    @Shon you certainly can

  10. CW said,

    Thanks Gary! Got this one Saturday.

    Now it will just be a race to see if I can get a statement close and the points posted in time to take advantage of the 50% transfer bonus to Avios they have going on through 3/31.

  11. Gary said,

    @cw the *US* membership rewards program doesn’t currently have a transfer bonus to BA

  12. CW said,

    Scratch that…seems the 50% bonus I was seeing was from a (poorly labeled) AMEX Canada site…

  13. CW said,

    @Gary – yep…

  14. Adam said,

    A minute ago, I saw the 75,000 mile offer for American Express Business Rewards Gold on mail.yahoo.com. On the east coast, it has been March 12th for about a half hour, so I suspect the offer just started.

  15. Gary said,

    @Adam indeed Business Gold Rewards, not Premier Rewards Gold

  16. Teri said,

    Gary,
    If I have the Business Premier Gold card, I can still apply for the personal card and get the sign-up bonus, right?

  17. Gary said,

    @Teri right
