Excellent iPhone Travel App

A few days, ago, I caved, and bought an iPhone. I am now officially as cool as everyone else. I’ve been browsing the iTunes app story, and happened across an excellent flight tracking application, that costs absolutely nothing to download and use.

Appropriately entitled, “Flight,” the application unflinchingly boasts itself as “The best flight app on mobile ever.” Flight allows a real-time flight tracking with map display, and access to basic facts needed by most of the non-travel nerds out there, such as time of flight, and time of landing. For the flight nerds, Flight also provides aircraft information and airport terminal information (hey, a lot of people care whether it’s a 737-900 or 737-900ER).

Overall, I’m finding it pretty intuitive to use. My only complaint is the airline “code” system with which Flight forces you to look up flights, if you search for flights by a specific flight number, which took a bit of adjustment. Otherwise, one can find their specific airline “code” by entering a departure and arrival airport. Best of all, the app is designed by a Japanese company, NiburuTech, and app disclaimers are provided in that wonderful, whimisical,  poetic Japanese style: “All data in this app is from internet, we are not responsible for its accuracy and all consequences it causes.”

Thanks for the tip. It doesn’t seem to handle flights like UA 900 very well, which has two parts (SAN-SFO and then SFO-FRA) with different aircraft. But it certainly looks promising.

Truthfully, and I think I should add this to the post, it’s still in Beta. A bit clumsy, but pretty good thus far. It also seems to have a problem with *A codeshared flights – as in, it has NZ 8722, or some other high flight number, running SFO – JFK non-stops.

Brett, it’s only a flight tracking app. The stewardess doesn’t actually come with it.

I know that, g. that’s why I downloaded iDutch, the only app that turns your iPhone into a KLM flight attendant!
