American Airlines is currently running a purchase miles promotion, where you can buy up to 90,000 miles with a 30% + 20% bonus (you can opt for another bonus instead of the 20% also, read below). With this promotion, if you purchase (buy or gift) 60,000 miles by December 31, 2013 you will receive a 30% bonus PLUS you will be given the option to select 1 out of 4 promos in January:

  • 20% additional bonus miles – In addition to the 30% bonus you can earn 20% extra bonus miles that will be deposited into your account by January 31, 2014
  • 10% off flights on aa.com – Save 10% on flights on aa.com when you book by February 6, 2014, for travel starting February 18, 2014 through May 18, 2014
  • 5,000-mile discount on award – Get a 5000-mile discount for up to three passengers, that’s a total saving of up to 15,000 miles when you book between January 24, 2014 and February 21, 2014, for travel between February 18, 2014 through May 18, 2014 (for flights originating in contiguous US or Canada)
  • Three 500-mile upgrades – If you are an AAdvantage Elite Member you can enjoy an additional three 500-mile upgrades

The 20% bonus is overall the best option as it gives you 12,000 points to use at any later date, although if you are looking to purchase three award tickets, you might find value on the 5,000-mile discount on award option.

While this is one of the better promotions that American has had in regards to purchasing miles, remember, purchasing miles is still expensive! And, through this Friday you can actually purchase American Airline miles cheaper through the US Airways purchase miles promotion. Although with the US Airways promotion you will have to wait until those miles can be transferred over to American Airlines. The US Airways promotion if you go all in will cost you 1.8 cents per mile. With this American Airlines promotion it will cost you 2.01 cents per mile.

As always, I do not recommend speculatively purchasing miles, but do the math to see if it is cheaper for you than purchasing a ticket outright. Just make sure the flight you are looking for has award availability!

  • Dave said,

The US Airways promotion expired December 20.
