I am way past due for my latest round, but for some personal and other reasons I have delayed a few weeks. One of them was to make 100% sure I was well past the hard and fast 365 days since closed rule with AMEX as I did not want anything to mess up my potential 10,000 MQM’s on the way when I went for a new Delta AMEX personal Reserve card. I also thought long and hard over what cards I wanted for my travel goals for 2013/2014.
First let’s take a quick peak at my credit score pre round. I had dropped off a few hard hits to my score and that was down to a respectable 8 on the trans-union score. Also, my total credit score had, as I expected, come back nicely since last round. Not just nicely, but higher than it had been for a long time for a regular credit card applicant like me. Take a look.
So what were my choices and what was my thinking and what did I go for and why. I went for four cards, and the results surprised me a bit. I only got one, yes one, instant approval. I went for two personal and two business cards. As much as I was tempted to try the Frontier card, and I think the airline is OK from what all have told me, I really needed more US AIR points since the Grand Slam did not happen this year.
- Card ONE – Barclays US AIR card.
Result – Instant approval with $12k+ line.
Reason for card – This will get me enough for a 1st class ticket to Sweden. I went for the official offer I was sure to get full points and did. I tend to be conservative, but I always get my points this way.
- Card TWO – Chase INK Plus business card.
Result – We will get back to you. Now I don’t wait. I did wait till the next day, called HERE (at bottom of list) to find out my status and if they had any questions. I spent time going over my business numbers with the rep, told him I like my BOLD card but a credit vs. charge card would be nice and I would be happy to move credit from my United card if need be as I value the INK card much more than I do the United card. Approved with full line moved from United to my new INK PLUS! Sweet as THIS was the card I really wanted to make sure I got on this round. Just SWEET!
Reason for card – My Ultimate rewards balance was a bit low after redeeming so much for my 25th anniversary trip. This will add a bunch more and let me play with BlueBird et al!
Other thoughts – If you got the BOLD or PLUS with the higher $10,000 spend, why not try unbumping the bonus and either call or send a secure message to Chase when logged in to ask them to match it if you got the card inside 90 days!
- Card Three – Delta AMEX Reserve card.
Result – We will get back to you. Called and was routed to India. I don’t like so much of AMEX’s approval and such is in the east now, but that is the way of things so be aware. I was told I would have an answer in a few days. Next day, e-mail stating I am approved! Sweet!
Reason for card – Another 10k MQM’s, another buy-one-get-one-free ticket with Delta each year, another card that I can, with spending $60,000 earn an extra 30,000 MQM’s each year. I will have to think long and hard about keeping them both and spending the $900 a year in fees. But, with a retention call to each, if I can net 20-30,000 Skymiles each year, I think that can work just fine with all the other perks!
Other thoughts – For those of you who heard me speak at the “DO’s”, this is a good data point for you to keep in mind!
- Card FOUR – US BANK FlexPerks business card.
Result – Please wait. Then declined! I called back. Told no again due to ARS (I really dislike these guys – Advance Resoltion Services). I was told, like with my personal card last round, I could contact them to clear it up (you can’t btw). I told rep I had perfect credit & had never ever missed a payment, been with US BANK for years, have a HUGE business line with AMEX but want to spend some of that with them. Please could a human review the application rather than just saying no due to ARS. Also said I would be happy to move some of my line from my personal Flex Perks card as I need less there and more on my business card. They reopened the app and a few days later – Approved!
Reason for card – With a little spend, I get another $400 in buying power to buy Delta tickets that will earn RDM’s & MQM’s. I plan to save these for repositioning flights when I find a great mileage run deal next year and book some back to back trips.
Other thoughts – US BANK and their ARS drives me crazy. I did not go buy a $10 track phone to test using that as my phone number on the app over my standard one. I wish I had, but honestly think the results would have been the same. ARS warns US BANK about those who ask for a lot of credit as we do. That does not make us a bad credit risk, it just kicks us out of the system automatically and we have to get a human to see we are worth having to the bank. Be alert that this bank takes WORK!
So I was able to maintain my 100% approvals going for many many years now. I clearly have and have had a bunch of cards. I have closed, opened & moved lines around. I have done challenges and called for retention points each and every year. I love my points! I am also not afraid to call the reconsideration lines (see list at bottom of linked page) and I do not wait for rejection letters to come to me. I am proactive and even with only 1 of 4 instant approvals I was confident I would get the four cards I wanted to have this round and I did!
A man wise beyond my years just keeps saying, your credit is one of your most important assets, treat it as such. Rick, I do and each round I do, I thank you for opening my eyes so many years ago! – René
