Today only: Free Uber rides in Mumbai/Chennai today to encourage voting

Earlier this month, I wrote about the great move Uber made in Delhi with providing two free rides to voters to encourage them to get out and vote.

The campaign is a national one, and since it is voting day in Chennai and Mumbai today, you can sure use two free rides between 7 am and 7 pm today. The promo code for Chennai, which is valid for these 12 hours, is VOTECHENNAI, while for Mumbai, it is, VOTEMUM. You can add these promo codes mentioned above as a new or existing user of Uber.

If you’re not familiar with Uber, it is a smartphone application for iOS/Android which connects you to a nearby premium/luxury car such as a Toyota sedan or a BMW/Mercedes sedan car. The rides are on demand so they don’t accept prior reservations, and the app is the only way to connect with a ride. Payments are only via credit card at the moment which has to be stored in the app. I’ve had my number with them for a very long time and I find it safe to leave it with them. They’ve recently launched in Chennai and Mumbai. Here is my experience of my first Uber ride in India.

The Uber system allows for referral credits, which means if you choose to be introduced to Uber by my blog, you can use this link to sign-up, and you’d get 300 INR as referral credit for use at a later date [I get a similar amount when you take your first ride].

Similarly, when you introduce your friends to Uber with your referral link, you get INR 300 when they take their first ride, and they get INR 300 to start up with their first ride.

There is also a contest where users can tweet with the hashtag #UberVoteMumbai and #UberVoteChennai or Instagram their pictures and videos after voting. Users also have to write back saying why their vote was important. The most interesting answers stand a chance to win Uber credits.

Go ahead, vote and enjoy the rides. Sorry for being a late riser on voting day!

P.S.: Be aware that if you can’t take your phones inside the voting stations (depending on the interpretation of the rules by the officer), so you can leave them behind with your Uber drivers.
