Ability to change offer is good news: Laura, Marriott Rewards representative on MarriottRewardsInsiders.com, states to call Marriott Rewards Guest Services 1-801-468-4000 if you prefer a different offer of these three than the one you received and you should be able to change your offer.

The MegaBonus Debate where Marriott Rewards Insiders ask “Why not let me choose my MegaBonus?â€

There is a much-needed thread happening about the recurring Marriott Rewards MegaBonus promotion on MarriottRewardsInsiders.com, the official Marriott-run social website bulletin board and forums. My Loyalty Traveler opinion is the Marriott Rewards team does not invest much thought into creating points-based loyalty promotions. This MegaBonus gets rolled out every few months with few changes.

I wandered over to MarriottRewardsInsiders.com to see if there was any news about MegaBonus and found the thread “Better Promos for Silver members than Platinum!!!†The title expresses the sentiment of some Marriott Rewards elite members regarding the high threshold of nights needed for the current MegaBonus promotion offers. [Note to readers: you must be logged into Marriott Rewards account to read MarriottRewardsInsiders.com forums. Otherwise link takes you to sign-in/enrollment page.]

The basic thread starts with a Marriott Rewards Platinum member asking why his business partner as a Marriott Rewards Silver elite member gets a free night certificate after two stays while he as a Platinum elite only earns 40,000 points after 25 hotel nights in the same period?

Two free nights at a Marriott category-4 hotel are essentially equivalent to 40,000 points. The cost of a Marriott Rewards category-4 reward night is 20,000 points. The Silver elite member has the ability to earn the equivalent of 40,000 points as two free night certificates in as few as four hotel nights while the Platinum member needs 25 nights to earn 40,000 points.

The argument that points are better than free night certificates is valid. Points do not expire at the end of the year like the free night certificate. Points can be used for high category hotels and higher value travel rewards and miles.

The basic question being asked as the thread develops is why Marriott Rewards members are targeted for promotion offers rather than offered a choice of MegaBonus options and self-selecting based on anticipated travel?

The Marriott Rewards member is in the best position to know if two free night certificates after four stays is a more suitable promotion for anticipated summer travel rather than 40,000 points after 25 nights.

Personally I was targeted for the stay twice and earn a free night certificate which is the same MegaBonus offer I have repeatedly received for the past two years. A potential two free nights works for me.

Remember to give Marriott Rewards Guest Services a call at 1-801-468-4000 if your offer does not work for you.
