This offer will go live on Sunday, April 20 at http://www.ihg.com/lacsale.

On April 15, 2014 there will be a 5,000 points reduction in the cost of reward nights at more than 100 hotels in the IHG Rewards Club program. The word from IHG Corporate Communications is there will be no hotels rising in reward cost with the changes coming next week. Some good news is welcome after the American Airlines announcement yesterday eliminating North America gateway stopovers and OneWorld distance-based rewards.

Sample hotels dropping reward category April 15, 2014.

  • InterContinental Hotel Shanghai-Puxi, China – 35,000 to 30,000 IHG Rewards Club points.
  • Crowne Plaza Geneva, Switzerland – 35,000 to 30,000 IHG Rewards Club points.
  • Hotel Indigo Fort Myers Downtown River District, Florida, U.S. -  30,000 to 25,000 IHG Rewards Club points.
  • Holiday Inn Resort PhuketMai Khao Beach Resort, Phuket, Thailand – 20,000 to 15,000 IHG Rewards Club points.
  • Holiday Inn Ciudad De Mexico- Trade Center, Mexico – 15,000 to 10,000 IHG Rewards Club points.
  • Holiday Inn Express Frankfurt-Messe, Germany -  25,000 to 20,000 IHG Rewards Club points.
  • Staybridge Suites – San Antonio-Stone Oak, Texas, U.S. – 20,000 to 15,000 IHG Rewards Club points .
  • Candlewood Suites Virginia Beach-Norfolk, Virginia, U.S. -  25,000 to 20,000 IHG Rewards Club points.

The hotels listed here were provided in the IHG corporate email I received. There was no word if there will be a complete published list of the 100+ hotels changing category on April 15. That would certainly help IHG Rewards Club members, however, IHG Rewards Club, like Best Western Rewards does not publish lists of hotels in each reward category on their websites. In fact, I noticed today that I could not access the reward chart without member login.

IHG Rewards Club restructured their hotel loyalty program reward nights last year when the hotels were changed from brand level reward rates to a category tiered system with 9 reward categories from 10,000 points to 50,000 points per night. And essentially there are ten reward levels since PointBreaks drop the rate to 5,000 points per night at about 75 to 175 hotels each promotion period for this reward level.

70% of more than 4,500 IHG hotels worldwide are at 20,000 points or less.

Up to this point in time, as RoomKey.com enters its third year of operation as a pop-up annoyance when searching hotel chain sites, the greatest use I have derived from the company is a t-shirt I picked up at a TBEX conference in 2012 and still wear regularly. RoomKey is owned by hotel chains including Choice, Hilton, Hyatt, InterContinental and Wyndham. The idea is to try and draw you back into a chain hotel booking after leaving one of the the hotel chain’s booking sites when you see the RoomKey pop-up screen. So when you check a Hilton hotel for New York, RoomKey displays other hotels in its network of chain hotels with rates.

RoomKey is planning enhancements to its website that may make the site more desirable than annoying.

Welcome to Room Key

Founded by the world’s leading hotel companies, hospitality is who we are and what we do. Featuring 100+ brands you trust across 159 countries, each time you book direct through Room Key, you earn your qualifying hotel rewards. For maximum value, link your hotel rewards programs to compare member-only benefits on Room Key…then simply Search hotels. Book direct. Relax.

Tnooz.com has an interview article with Room Key CEO John F. Davis III discussing a new concept to be introduced in 2014. RoomKey will allow members to register their loyalty program memberships. RoomKey.com will then organize hotel rates at hotel chains where you have status. Clicking on the hotel will detail the benefits you can expect at the hotel based on your loyalty membership and elite status. You can check your nights and stays and point balance in different hotel loyalty programs. There is a RoomKey.com hotel loyalty program dashboard image in the Tnooz article.

Perhaps even more significant is the article suggests the recent UK ruling on hotel rates price-fixing by Expedia, booking.com and hotel chains means members of a closed group like loyalty program membership can be offered lower rates than publicly available. Hyatt is already doing this with their 20% off Elite Member discount.

Hotel stay promotions may move beyond targeted personalized points offers like IHG Big Win to targeted loyalty member discount rates.

RoomKey.com as a standalone website.

The growth of mobile booking in the hotel industry sounds like it has been an impediment to RoomKey.com growth. The website changes with hotel loyalty membership registration are aimed at making RoomKey.com a direct hotel booking destination website since pop-ups do not work in a mobile environment.

For me, a dashboard of loyalty program data while I am planning hotel bookings is a desirable feature.

If RoomKey.com can also add promotion bonus data to room rate searches, then that would be a major innovation. It would be a great convenience to know that booking the next Marriott stay would earn a free night with MegaBonus or that Hyatt Place night comes with an extra 1,000 bonus points.

IHG Rewards Club points are on sale with a targeted mystery bonus offer for 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% more points on your purchase. This offer is available through 11:59pm ET April 21, 2014. My email offer came from IHG Rewards Club on Friday, March 21 with the title “Reveal Your Mystery Bonus”.

My targeted offer was 50% bonus points. I will pass on this promotion. Note that the offer is targeted to the specific IHG Rewards Club member and is non-transferrable.

The regular purchase rate for IHG Rewards Club points ranges from $11.50 to $13.50 per 1,000 points. The price is lower when purchasing a higher number of points.

You may purchase points in 1,000 increments:

  • 1,000 – 10,000 points for $13.50 per 1,000 points
  • 11,000 – 25,000 points for $12.50 per 1,000 points
  • 26,000 – 60,000 points for $11.50 per 1,000 points

Here are the promotional rates depending on your bonus offer:

25% Bonus Points

  • 1,000 – 10,000 points for $10.80 per 1,000 points
  • 11,000 – 25,000 points for $10.00 per 1,000 points
  • 26,000 – 60,000 points for $9.20 per 1,000 points

50% Bonus Points

  • 1,000 – 10,000 points for $9.00 per 1,000 points
  • 11,000 – 25,000 points for $8.33 per 1,000 points
  • 26,000 – 60,000 points for $7.67 per 1,000 points

75% Bonus Points

  • 1,000 – 10,000 points for $7.71 per 1,000 points
  • 11,000 – 25,000 points for $7.14 per 1,000 points
  • 26,000 – 60,000 points for $6.57 per 1,000 points

100% Bonus Points

  • 1,000 – 10,000 points for $6.75 per 1,000 points
  • 11,000 – 25,000 points for $6.25 per 1,000 points
  • 26,000 – 60,000 points for $5.75 per 1,000 points

IHG Mystery Purchase

IHG Rewards Club bonus points offer analysis

My targeted offer was 50% bonus points. I will not consider this offer at 50% bonus points. The 50% bonus points offer means I would pay $90 for 10,000 points or I could buy 60,000 points for $460.

Through booking Points & Cash rewards and canceling the reward reservation after I purchase points, I can buy 60,000 points for $420.

There is no discount with this mystery bonus offer compared to the other option I have for acquiring points.

The only real deal here is if you are targeted for 100% bonus points. The rate drops to $5.75 per 1,000 points. The 100% bonus means 120,000 points can be purchased for $690.

This is $150 less than buying 120,000 points through Points & Cash reservations that are cancelled after booking. It will cost $840 to buy 120,000 points through Points & Cash rewards or $690 to buy 120,000 points for a member targeted with the 100% bonus points.

Buying IHG Rewards Club points is not an elite qualifying points transaction, so that is not a consideration here in favor of the Points.com purchase.

In my opinion, this mystery bonus points offer is just another IHG marketing gimmick with little value for the savvy IHG Rewards Club member. I’d only consider this offer if I needed some points to enable booking Points & Money rewards to buy more points at a lower rate.

Here is a response I posted on Deals We Like when she asked, Is Purchasing InterContinental Points Worthwhile?

Last year when IHG Rewards Club points were available for $567 to buy 100,000 points during the U.S. Travel Association’s Daily Getaways, the IHG points did not sell out.

As Stephen Colbert likes to say, “The market has spoken”.

If you have a plan for using IHG points, then this current sale is a good deal at 100% bonus points.

Otherwise stay once or twice at an IHG brand hotel, earn 10,000+ points through stackable promotion bonuses, and then book Points & Cash reward stays to buy more points and cancel those stays to build your account balance at the rate of 10,000 points for $70 when you actually need points.

This post shows how I received nearly 16,000 points on a one night stay at a Holiday Inn Express. And I even got my money back for the hotel stay payment since it was a Best Rate Guarantee.

How did bloggers know about the new PointBreaks list on Thursday before it was posted on the IHG Community online forum Friday?

The secret is we have inside information directly from IHG Americas corporate communications in Atlanta.

The email came from Atlanta on Thursday telling select bloggers that the list of new PointBreaks hotels will be posted on IHG Rewards Club Community on Friday. The official release on Monday on the IHG website is when the PointBreaks hotels become bookable at 5,000 points per reward night for stays March 24 to May 31, 2014.

Post it once, post it twice and third times a charm when you can actually book these PointBreaks hotels.

In the blogosphere where page views = income, the IHG email generated several posts around the blogosphere on Thursday, March 20 with a list of seven PointBreaks hotels to display as a teaser.

On Friday, March 21 the full list was revealed on IHG Rewards Club community forum and bloggers created a second post with the entire list of new PointBreaks hotels to inform readers the hotels can be booked on Monday.

On Monday, March 24 the full list will be posted again on blogs with the link to the PointBreaks page for booking.

In past years someone would notice the list of IHG PointBreaks hotels and post it to FlyerTalk and then bloggers scrambled to get the list organized and formatted for a blog post.

These days, IHG leaks the information to a set of bloggers who then create two posts on PointBreaks hotels before they are even bookable.

This is how marketing works in the blogosphere these days. Inside information bloggers receive in advance of official releases is a joint effort between corporate marketing and a blogger’s desire for blog page views generated from new information.

(Wink-Wink: Keep your eyes open for a blitz of Hilton blog posts on Monday that will drown out the IHG PointBreaks posts. Perhaps TravelBloggerBuzz will do a blog count on the number of posts published Monday.)

I skipped Thursday’s initial IHG PointBreaks post, since I knew the full list was coming out yesterday.

So, without further insight, here is the full list of IHG PointBreaks hotels to be posted on Monday, March 24. These hotels will be available for reward nights at 5,000 points per night for stays March 24 to May 31, 2014. There are 88 hoels in the USA and 63 international hotels.

One of these days I will get to that InterContinental Cleveland on PointBreaks and visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Holiday Inn Resorts has a good looking deal for one free night certificate after a two-night stay by May 23, 2014. You need to register for this IHG offer at holidayinnresorts.com/freenight.

HI Resort free night offer

There are 19 Holiday Inn Resorts listed in USA, Aruba, Grand Cayman and Mexico.

The problem is after I registered, I was unable to find this offer for any of these hotels on any dates I tried.

Crowdsourcing might help or perhaps writing about this offer on Loyalty Traveler might get someone at IHG to check this offer out and see why there is no availability.

Free Night Later Terms & Conditions

1. You must register your IHG® Rewards Club Number in advance of your stay at www.holidayinnresorts.com/freenight and stay at least two consecutive nights between February 17, 2014 and May 23, 2014.

2. Offer is open to legal residents of the 50 U.S., including DC, Canada and Mexico.

3. Offer valid at participating Holiday Inn Resort property located in the United States, Mexico, or Caribbean.

4. Only one (1) Resort Free Night will be awarded during the promotion period.

5. Offer not applicable to groups and cannot be used in conjunction with any other offers or special promotions.

6. If you are not already an IHG® Rewards Club member you may join for free at www.ihgrewardsclub.com. A stay is one or more consecutive nights at the same hotel regardless of frequency of check-in/check-out. A stay is qualified when paying qualifying rates, which include most business and leisure rates. Qualifying Room Rates do not include the following reduced room rates: net wholesale individual and group rate, certain package rates, employee discount rate, friends and family rate, crew rate, special discounted contract rates, seasonal worker/crew rate, 50% travel club discount rate, travel industry discount rate, distressed passenger rate, IHG® Rewards Club Reward Nights/Airline Hotel Reward rate, complimentary hotel stays and any other rates not defined as a Qualifying Room Rate. Also excluded are opaque rates and “name your own price” rates (where hotel name, location and/or rate not visible until after booking are submitted).

7. Resort Free Night is valid at Holiday Inn Resort hotels and must be redeemed, and stay must be completed, within 12 months from date of issue. Resort Free Night is valid for one standard room night rate and applicable taxes only. Rooms are limited, subject to prior sale and availability of allocated resources and may be unavailable during high demand periods. Resort Free Night may not be transferred, extended beyond the expiration date, redeemed for cash, or re-credited for points. Individual hotel’s cancellation policy applies to the use of the Resort Free Night. Cancellation fees apply if cancellation is made outside of the hotel’s cancellation time period. Resort Free Night rules and regulations are subject to change.

8. Program terms and participating properties are subject to change without notice.

9. Offer may be discontinued at any time without prior notice.

10. Subject to IHG Rewards Club Membership Terms and Conditions.

There is also an offer for 5th night free on paid stays and I can pull up that prepaid, nonrefundable rate for 5th night free, but that deal is not as enticing to me as a future free night at Holiday Inn Resorts with a 2-night paid stay.

Since 2009 my blog has carried a link for the IHG Friends & Family rate. 2009 was the year hotel loyalty programs threw everything at potential guests like free nights, RocketMiles-type frequent flyer bonuses and complimentary high elite status to guests. Steve Sickel, senior VP of IHG Marketing for the Americas at Atlanta HQ, published his Friends & Family Rate link on FlyerTalk back in 2009. We could all be friends of Steve Sickel for several years and get hotel rate discounts.

A couple of weeks ago, BoardingArea staff sent me a notice that Google was dinging me for a nonfunctional link to the IHG Friends & Family rate. Apparently, Steve de-friended us some time ago and I had not paid attention. Thanks for the years of IHG friendly discounts Steve!

No worries. IHG is still a friendly place and new friends are easy to find.
