Background:

On my recent trip to Savannah, Georgia, I had the opportunity to tour the new Thompson Savannah. It opened in 2021 and has 193 guest rooms. Thompson is part of Hyatt and aims to be a  luxury boutique lifestyle hospitality brand. I’ve toured the Thompson Central Park before, but I have still not stayed overnight at a Thompson. The brand is definitely on my list to have an overnight stay at soon.

Arrival:

The exterior looks new and is part of a new development with a nice open park in front of the hotel that hosts events, and luxury apartments across the street.

The lobby feels quite sleek and welcoming. Once you enter, if you turn left, you’ll see the reception and concierge desk. I learned that the lobby has art from students at the Savannah College of Art and Design which was pretty cool.

To the right you’ll find lobby seating and the Bar by Fleeting.

Further down, is the local signature restaurant Fleeting, which serves coastal Southern cuisine. On this level, there is also the Stevedore Bakery for your morning coffee and pastries.

Rooms:

I toured two different room types, the standard 1 King and the Premier Suite.

Standard 1 King:

First, the standard 1 King room comes in at 340 square feet, and I really enjoyed the luxurious finishes and darker color palate. There’s also a nice sofa lounger in the corner (except for the standard 2 Queen room). A Nespresso Machine comes with the room, and the bedding is custom 400-thread count Sferra linens. For the bathroom, it has a nice standup shower with toiletries provided by Brooklyn-based D.S. & Durga. While it’s a different scent, I like the D.S. & Durga lotion that American Airlines Flagship Business uses.

Premier Suite:

The Premier Suite is a good size at 535 square feet. It is good for those who want some extra space, or even for families as there is a pullout sofa. As you enter the room, you’ll come to an oversized living room. A Nespresso Machine is also provided.

The separate bedroom has a king-sized bed that features 400 thread count linens and a 55-inch TV.

The bathroom is quite spacious, with a large stand-up shower, and a separate W/C.

Amenities:

There’s a nice outdoor pool with loungers, fire pits, private daybeds, and cabanas. Plus, there is a pool bar.

There is also a good-sized fitness center that features Peloton Bikes.

Additionally, on the same level as the fitness center and pool, there is an indoor lounge called the Sunroom which is quite unique. It also features a bar!

Pet-Friendly:

One note for those who want to bring their dog. The Thompson Savannah is a pet-friendly hotel and welcomes all dogs at no additional charge.

Meeting Rooms:

There’s a boardroom and three meeting rooms. The largest ballroom is the Argyle ballroom and it can fit 240 people.

Bar Julian Rooftop:

This is probably my favorite part of the hotel. Bar Julian is currently the tallest rooftop bar in Savannah and serves cocktails and a Mediterranean-inspired menu.

I had the pleasure to dine here, as well as see the 4th of July fireworks! I enjoyed all the food I had, and my favorites were the Crispy Cauliflower Harra and Mushroom Pizza. The cocktails were pretty good too, and I also indulged on a “mocktail” which I find very cute that they call “No Supervision Required”.

Takeoff Tip: You’ll have great views of the 4th of July fireworks that take place from the water near the Talmadge Memorial Bridge.

Location + House Car:

While the Thompson Savannah is by no means in a bad location, it is in a new development that doesn’t quite have the old Southern charm of the city. It’s along the east side of the river and approximately a 10 minute walk from the main riverfront area, which can be seen as a pro or con. Some might like the peace away from the tourist crowds. Additionally, it’s a 30 minute walk to Forsyth Park, and about a 20 minute walk to the core Historic District. But not to fret, you can take the house car within 2 miles of the historic district!

The house car is complimentary for all guests, and it’s a Tesla Model X.
