A couple months ago I did a post that talked about several of the summer hotel promotions, but now that we are actually into summer, I wanted to revisit a few of the current promos, include a big reminder, and share a hotel promo rumor!

  • I first wanted to remind everyone to start narrowing down their Starwood Preferred Guest “Nice Choice” selection, in case you haven’t already done so.  The deadline to register and make a selection is June 30th, so don’t let the deadline slip by without at least picking something.  You get to choose between three earning periods: May 1 – July 31, June 1 – August 31, or July 1 – September 30.  I will be selecting the latest earning period possible since I really haven’t had any SPG stays recently.  I know I have one in late July, and assume I will likely have at least a couple more by the end of September.  Since I will only have a few SPG stays during this time frame, my best option is double points after the second stay.  If I thought several of my stays were likely to be in Sheratons, then I would select the option that awards 500 bonus points per night at a Sheraton.  It is harder to choose for my husband who may have many SPG stays from July 1 – September 30.  For him we are considering triple points after 15 nights, 3,000 bonus points after 6 nights (max 9,000 points), or a free weekend night certificate at a Category 1-5 hotel after 10 nights.  The trick is not knowing exactly how many nights he will have in that time frame.
  • According to this Flyertalk thread and poster ZLCACT, there is a rumor that the Q3 promotion for Hilton will be triple points.  The Q2 promo was for double points or double miles, so this would be an improvement over that promotion for those who like HHonors points, and is pretty good considering you need 15 nights to earn triple points with the Starwood promo.  I have found rumors like this to be pretty credible in the past, but of course you never know for sure until it is officially confirmed.  Either way, I’m sure the Q3 Hilton promo will be announced very soon since they are the only hotel chain that actually runs promotions on a quarterly basis.
  • Based solely on multiple conversations I have had with some frequent travelers, many seem to be overlooking the strength of the current promotion that runs through August 31st and awards up to 2,500 airline miles per Hyatt stay.  This is a tiered promo, so the first stay just earns you the regular 500 airline miles, the second and third earn 2,000 airline miles, and then after that you earn 2,500 airline miles up to a maximum of 24,500 miles.  If you have a night at a Hyatt that costs $100, that night would earn you 500 Hyatt Gold Passport points at the regular 5 points per dollar.  Or, if you participate in this promo, you could be earning 2,500 airline miles with carriers such as United and American instead.  Hyatt points are valuable, but I’ll take 2,500 airline miles over 500 Hyatt points every day of the week.  This option is only better on short, inexpensive stays.  The beauty is if you have a more expensive stay, you can credit that one to Hyatt points, and then go back to crediting the others to airline miles.  So, in case my limited conversations are a representative sample of other travelers, don’t overlook this promo!  In theory, you should still be earning your Diamond amenity bonus if you have Diamond status (though I have yet to have any of mine successfully post – still working on that).  Update: Confirmed with Hyatt that you do get your Diamond amenity bonus points even if you credit to airline miles, so if yours aren’t posing correctly, they can be fixed.  You do need to register for this promo, so check out this post for more details or for registration links.
  • I don’t think I have mentioned the Best Western promo that awards a free night certificate after three stays between 6/17/12 and 8/19/12, so I want to shine some light on that option as well.  The free night voucher is valid until January 31, 2013.  You do need to register for that promo.  Assuming you have stays at a Best Westerns, this sounds like a very solid promo.  If you have a road trip through some of the smaller towns across this country, this promo may make perfect sense for your family.

Of course there are other great hotel promos going on such as the Club Carlson “Big Night Giveaway” that I have written extensively about and the Marriott MegaBonus promo that is also great for short and inexpensive stays, and more.  Which hotel promo are you focusing on this summer?

    Any word on Priority Club point breaks for stays after July 31? When do they announce?

  2. Nick says:

    I have to say the SPG “nice choice” is one of their worst promos to date. Nothing these days really comes close to the Hyatt Big Welcome Back from a few years ago. Im sticking to the Marriott Megabonus stay 6 earn 3 nights Cat 1-4.

  3. Steelsnow says:

    Yes on earning the Hyatt diamond amenity bonus while crediting the stay to airline miles.

  4. Marcela says:

    There’s also the Marriott free night promotion (category 1-4) after 3 stays.

    @bf, it usually comes out just a few days before the end of the quarter, so I wouldn’t expect it until late July.
    @Nick, it isn’t my favorite either, though I guess it is better than nothing.
    @Steelsnow, I have also confirmed with Hyatt that is how it should work, but it is taking some work on the back end to get mine fixed. Were your automatically posting correctly?
    @Marcela, the Marriott promo is quite good for those with short stays!

    Thanks for the reminder!

    @Nickfromct, no problem. ;)

    FYI, I have been taking advantage of the Hyatt promotion but everyone should know that the miles are awarded per stay, not per night. I booked and paid separately for 4 individual one night stays at a Hyatt in Houston. I checked in and checked out every day of my stay. I did not get credited for each night separately. Hyatt told me that if you book separate nights at the same hotel, there has to be 24 hours in between each stay to earn full credit. Now I’m hotel hopping from one Hyatt to another. What a pain!
