The much beloved Chase Sapphire Preferred Card has introduced a way to earn more points on dining expenses on “First Fridays” (the first Friday of each month). They are increasing the regular two points per dollar earned on dining expenses charged to the card to three points per dollar on First Fridays. For those who are calendar challenged, those dates for 2013 are May 3rd, June 7th, July 5th, August 2nd, September 6th, October 4th, November 1st, and December 6th.

For those not familiar with the Sapphire Preferred, dining expenses include not only sit-down restaurants, but also fast food joints, on take-out, coffee shops, etc. This means that on First Fridays you are earning 3x Ultimate Reward points at most all dining establishments that you can then transfer 1:1 to United, Hyatt, British Airways, Marriott, and more. Chase seems to have teamed up with Open Table for this so you can see which restaurants in a given city are most frequented by Chase Sapphire Preferred Cardholders. You can then click to make a reservation via Open Table. However according to the terms you will earn 3x at any restaurant – not just the ones that are listed as favorites.
Going from 2x to 3x on certain dates in the year is clearly not earth shattering, but I still like that they are doing little things to improve the program and innovate. For a long time we didn’t really see many changes with the Chase Sapphire Preferred, but within the last month we have now seen this 3x program addition as well as the addition of Ultimate Rewards transfer partner Virgin Atlantic. Program additions and extra ways to earn more points are always a good thing.
If you are dining out this quarter I would use the Chase Freedom® Visa since restaurants are a 5x bonus category until June 30th, but after that I would certainly do my best to use my Sapphire Preferred on First Fridays for my dining purchases – which shouldn’t be hard since I use it for most of my dining purchases anyway. If you had a large dining purchase coming up that wasn’t on a First Friday you could always get a gift card that day and use it later. Probably more trouble than it is worth in most cases, but for those that like to maximize every single point it would be an option.
Here are the full terms and conditions:
First Friday Reward Bonus: You will earn an additional 1 bonus point for each $1 of net purchases made with your credit card in the dining category – when you use your card at restaurants on May 3, June 7, July 5, August 2, September 6, October 4, November 1, and December 6, 2013 before midnight in the time zone where the purchase is made. The bonus point earned is in addition to the standard two points earned in the dining category for a total of 3 points, which may be stated in marketing material as 3X in dining – when you use your card at restaurants. Merchants who accept Visa/MasterCard credit cards are assigned a merchant code based on the kinds of products and services they sell. Chase groups similar merchant codes into categories for purposes of making rewards offers to you. Chase makes every effort to include all relevant merchant codes in its listed categories. However, even though a merchant or the items that it sells may appear to fit within a listed category, the merchant may not have a merchant code that falls within that category. Therefore, purchases with that merchant will not qualify for the stated rewards offer on category purchases. Please allow 6 to 8 weeks after qualifying transactions for bonus point to post to your account. There is no maximum bonus point accumulation for this promotional offer. Credit card product changes during the promotional period will forfeit this bonus offer. To qualify for this promotional offer, account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment. This promotional offer is non-transferable. This is a limited time offer. For more information about Chase rewards categories, see www.Chase.com/RewardsFAQs or your Rewards Program Rules and Regulations.
First Friday Favorite Restaurants: First Friday Favorite restaurants are all members of OpenTable Network. Initial ranking is based on Chase Sapphire card usage in the cites where they are located, subsequent ranking is based on votes made through the First Friday Facebook application. The rankings, by their nature are subjective opinions of individual Chase Sapphire Cardholders and voters. Chase does not endorse the rankings and shall have no liability with regard to reliance on them.
