This must be my lucky day. First, there was on-board Wifi on my United flight today to Tampa. Second, the plane is taking me to Tampa to attend and present at the Frequent Traveler University. This means I will get to hang out with lots of other miles and points fanatics and can talk about miles without sounding like a crazy person! As an added bonus I’ll throw in that the flight was on-time and my E+ seat is quite comfy. I know, time to buy a lottery ticket! In case you are interested, here are a few details about the on-board Wifi and FTU.
United on-board internet:
United has a website where you can see the progress that they are making in adding on-board satellite based Wi-Fi to their fleet. They are making progress, but the odds are still stacking against your flight having on-board internet. My flight today was on a A320 aircraft, so according to their chart only about 22% of those planes are updated. Essentially, I got lucky that my plane had it, but it was a very nice surprise. I didn’t check to see in advance that it was available on my flight, but you can do that by looking at the Inflight Amenities tab on the Flight Status & Information. My roughly 2 hour flight cost $6.99 for decent, but far from spectacular, internet.
At this point they only have pricing for individual flights, but according to their FAQs they plan to offer additional options – possibly including daily, weekly, and/or monthly access – in the future. You can only have the internet on one device at a time, but you can switch between devices for no additional charge.
In-flight Wi-Fi really is pretty huge in making flight time more productive…you know, so you can blog in the air about having internet in the air. Just don’t expect to get anything substantial completed when you are flying with your kiddos. Save your $6.99 and focus on their needs instead on those flights!
Frequent Traveler University:
The point of today’s flight is to get me to Tampa so I can attend and present at the Frequent Traveler University at the Grand Hyatt in Tampa. I think this will be my third FTU to attend/present, and they have all been good times with good miles and points friends! This go-round I’ll be presenting on “Getting Started with Miles and Points “and “Family Travel Tips”. Both presentations are with my buddy and fellow blogger Pizzaman from Pizza in Motion.
I hope to see a few of you there either in the sessions or in the hallways! I also packed a few Mommy Points shirts for anyone who might want one. Just come ask before/after the sessions tomorrow, and if I have one left I’ll be happy to give it to you! I’m not sure how helpful it will be if you weren’t there, but I will be posting the slides from the presentations on the blog in the coming days for anyone who wants to take a look.
Hope everyone has a good Friday and a great weekend!
